PROVIDENCE \u2014The latest Rhode Island Comic Con<\/a> was a pop culture dream come true with plenty of\u00a0big and small screen\u00a0reunions,\u00a0beloved\u00a0celebrities,\u00a0fond\u00a0memories\u00a0and often adult, off-color\u00a0humor.<\/p>\n

The convention was held \u00a03 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 through Nov. 9 at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Amica Mutual Pavilion (formerly the Dunkin’ Donuts Center) in Providence. <\/p>\n

While it is impossible to do everything over a three-day weekend at Rhode Island Comic Con,\u00a0it’s\u00a0also\u00a0nearly impossible\u00a0to recap it.\u00a0But here goes.<\/p>\n

Geez Louise\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While Geena Davis, aka Thelma,\u00a0was a no-show for the highly\u00a0publicized\u00a0\u201cThelma & Louise\u201d\u00a0panel (due to her flight being canceled; Davis was there the next day for autographs and photo ops),\u00a0Louise (Susan Sarandon)\u00a0was no slouch as she\u00a0picked up\u00a0all\u00a0the slack.<\/p>\n

After moderator\u00a0Tim\u00a0Estiloz\u00a0gushed about Sarandon being an Oscar winner,\u00a0Sarandon\u00a0clarified\u00a0she’s\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cOscar one-time winner and four-time loser.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, Sarandon talked\u00a0in great lengths\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0unintended\u00a0lasting legacy\u00a0of\u00a0\u201cThelma & Louise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, when we made the\u00a0film,\u00a0we had no idea that we were doing anything other than making, basically, a cowboy movie with trucks and women,\u00a0instead of cowboys and horses,\u201d\u00a0Sarandon said.\u00a0\u201cI was just so happy to be able to work with a woman because, usually, in films if there are two women, one\u2019s older and one\u2019s younger and they hate each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarandon recalled\u00a0how she, Davis and director Ridley Scott\u00a0were all confused about\u00a0the \u201cbig backlash\u201d the film experienced\u00a0immediately\u00a0upon its\u00a0release.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody was quite sure\u00a0why\u00a0but they were saying that it encouraged suicide, which they definitely didn’t say for ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,’\u201d Sarandon said.\u00a0\u201cThey said\u00a0it was hateful toward men. And I think,\u00a0really, I remember,\u00a0it was\u00a0(hateful)\u00a0towards men who wore an\u00a0exorbitant\u00a0amount of jewelry. I\u00a0don’t\u00a0think it was against\u00a0all men,\u00a0And,\u00a0we really\u00a0didn’t\u00a0foresee it would ever have that kind of response … It was\u00a0kind of shocking\u00a0to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThelma & Louise\u201d\u00a0gained more political\u00a0clout\u00a0than was ever\u00a0intended\u00a0by\u00a0Scott, Sarandon said.\u00a0And,\u00a0the fact that it was\u00a0about\u00a0women\u00a0(and not men)\u00a0going on a road trip\u00a0is what made the film\u00a0a big deal,\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe actual\u00a0romanticizing\u00a0thing of going off a cliff, rather than going to jail, we\u00a0have Ridley to thank for\u00a0that,\u201d\u00a0Sarandon said.\u00a0\u201cI never figured out how he was going to make that a fun\u00a0moment,\u00a0but he managed to suspend that car and have that great\u00a0music\u00a0so we\u00a0didn’t\u00a0get depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the actors cast in the film\u00a0made it even better than the script was,\u00a0Sarandon said.<\/p>\n

\"Bryce<\/span><\/div>\n

Bryce Dallas Howard gets a kick out of Weird Al Yankovic’s “Jurassic Park” spoof, which, thanks to a fan, she is hearing for the first time, at the 2025 Rhode Island Comic Con.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, Brad Pitt, for instance, improvised so much, especially in the bedroom. But, also,\u00a0outside of the bedroom,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cAnd, all the\u00a0teasing of the husband, a lot of that was improvised. A lot of what Gina and I did was improvised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarandon said she and Davis\u00a0worried\u00a0that\u00a0their roles\u00a0were going to be reduced to\u00a0only\u00a0a voiceover.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so gorgeous\u00a0everyday\u00a0going to the set at sunrise and going home at sunset,\u201d\u00a0Sarandon said.\u00a0\u201cAnd they just were filming\u00a0everything,\u00a0and we\u00a0were sure that we would end up just being\u00a0some kind\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0voiceover telling the\u00a0story\u00a0with these\u00a0incredible\u00a0gorgeous\u00a0shots.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

For Sarandon,\u00a0she\u00a0said\u00a0told\u00a0the director that\u00a0the\u00a0one thing\u00a0she\u00a0didn’t\u00a0want to do\u00a0is\u00a0make\u00a0\u201cThelma &\u00a0Louise\u00a0\u201d\u00a0a revenge film.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, my character was\u00a0trying to understand why men think\u00a0that’s\u00a0a good idea\u00a0to\u00a0say\u00a0those things, to do those things. Why?\u00a0I\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0interested in making a film that was about\u00a0revenge. I\u00a0don’t\u00a0like those films.\u00a0I\u00a0don’t\u00a0like\u00a0violence as an answer to anything,\u00a0\u201d\u00a0Sarandon\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0don’t\u00a0think she killed that guy on purpose. I think that\u00a0there’s\u00a0a line\u00a0after she shoots him that says,\u00a0Keep\u00a0your mouth shut or something like that.\u00a0I think she\u00a0was just trying to shut him up.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end,\u00a0\u201cThelma and\u00a0Louise\u00a0\u201d\u00a0is a love story\u00a0between\u00a0those two women, Sarandon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved that it has become a language between women and their besties to take trips as long as they\u00a0don’t\u00a0do that line dance and drink too much everything’s cool,\u201d\u00a0Sarandon said.\u00a0\u201cBut I wish I could say we made it as a feminist thing but, by the fact, that there were two women, it became feminist.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

Calm in the Chaos Theory<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In her much lighter\u00a0panel, the always appealing\u00a0Bryce Dallas Howard\u00a0mused about\u00a0running in\u00a0high\u00a0heels\u00a0from dinosaurs\u00a0in\u00a0\u201cJurassic World\u201d\u00a0and became\u00a0absolutely giddy\u00a0when an audience member\u00a0introduced\u00a0to\u00a0her to Weird Al\u00a0Yankovic’s\u00a0\u201cJurassic Park\u201d\u00a0parody\u00a0done to the tune of\u00a0\u201cMcArthur’s\u00a0Park.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tickled pink<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy,\u00a0Andie\u00a0and Blaine of\u00a0\u201cPretty in\u00a0Pink”\u00a0fame,\u00a0and\u00a0Duckie, Jon Cryer,\u00a0were\u00a0all\u00a0on hand for a fun and whimsical panel\u00a0at the Rhode Island Comic Con.<\/p>\n

While McCarthy confessed that he was a bit of a jerk to Cryer while making\u00a0\u201cPretty in Pink,\u201d\u00a0Cryer, in his first comic con ever,\u00a0got him off the\u00a0hook, somewhat, by saying\u00a0that McCarthy\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0that much of a dick.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat it was he was quiet and, sort of, kept to himself,\u00a0which to\u00a0me,\u00a0means you hate me,\u201d\u00a0Cryer explained.\u00a0\u201cAnd Howie Deutch, the director,\u00a0later\u00a0said,\u00a0Oh, I cast\u00a0you guys\u00a0because I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0think you liked each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite not being Jewish, Cryer, who revealed he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Jewish folksongs,\u00a0said he\u00a0couldn’t\u00a0take credit for his memorable lip-sync\/mating dance\u00a0ritual\u00a0to\u00a0Otis\u00a0Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness,”\u00a0done to win Ringwald’s character over.<\/p>\n

Instead, Cryer gave\u00a0credit to Kenny Ortega, who also choreographed Dirty Dancing and\u00a0Ferris Buellers Day Off.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoward Deutch\u00a0got me together with Kenny the night before we were going to shoot. And Kenny became aware very quickly that I was not a professional dancer,\u201d\u00a0Cryer recalled.\u00a0\u201cIt was really about what the song meant and what I was hoping to convey to Andie (Ringwald).\u00a0I showed it to Howie and Lorne, the producer, the next\u00a0day\u00a0and they were not happy with it because they realized it was going to put us behind schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ringwald said\u00a0Duckie’s\u00a0dance was her\u00a0favorite scene in\u00a0\u201cPretty\u00a0In\u00a0Pink.\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing that made it so special\u00a0was\u00a0no one told her about\u00a0the scene\u00a0beforehand, which was a revelation to Cryer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0didn’t\u00a0even know,\u201d\u00a0Ringwald said.\u00a0\u201cI just knew I was just going to sit at the counter and Jon was going to come in and\u00a0do something. I had no\u00a0idea he was going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously?\u201d\u00a0Cryer interjected\u00a0\u201cWow!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really, really impressed,\u201d\u00a0Ringwald said.<\/p>\n

Ringwald said her second favorite scene\u00a0in the film\u00a0was her kiss with McCartney, which made his ears\u00a0perk up.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0smirked.\u00a0\u201cThat was definitely my favorite moment!\u201d<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0souvenirs\u00a0from the set,\u00a0Ringwald said she took\u00a0home\u00a0everything\u00a0from her wardrobe except for one\u00a0thing,\u00a0and that was the\u00a0pink\u00a0prom dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd\u00a0I’m\u00a0kicking myself now. I would love to have my prom dress. There\u00a0were\u00a0like four of them,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0\u201cThey made four of these horrible dresses and I hated\u00a0it\u00a0so much I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0take\u00a0them\u00a0but I wished I\u00a0had.\u00a0I would love to have it now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cryer\u00a0kept\u00a0Duckie’s\u00a0shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lent them to Planet Hollywood,\u00a0the\u00a0restaurant,\u00a0because\u00a0I\u00a0thought\u00a0I\u00a0was being\u00a0helpful. And they lost them,\u201d\u00a0Cryer\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0last thing I have\u00a0from Duckie\u00a0now is bolo ties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a blue shirt,\u201d\u00a0McCarthy\u00a0added.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Angie was tailored-made\u00a0to be played by\u00a0Ringwald, she revealed that there were three actors up for the role of Duckie\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Cryer, Michael J.\u00a0Fox\u00a0and Robert Downey Jr.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0for Blaine,\u00a0McCarthy’s character,\u00a0Ringwald said Charlie Sheen came in to read for that, which made Cryer deadpan,\u00a0\u201cOh, wow.\u201c<\/p>\n

\"Pam<\/span><\/div>\n

Pam Grier captivated the crowd at Rhode Island Comic Con.<\/p>\n

Black is beautiful<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pam Grier was an absolute\u00a0delight,\u00a0but her panel\u00a0at the Rhode Island Comic Con\u00a0is the kind that was so spontaneous and so unorthodox\u00a0and so in the moment\u00a0that you had to be there to appreciate it.<\/p>\n

While she talked about her glorious\u00a0Blaxploitation movie past with groundbreaking flicks\u00a0\u201cCoffy\u201d\u00a0and \u201cFoxy Brown,\u201d\u00a0the highlight of her panel was her\u00a0retelling\u00a0her audacious audition in front of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell for\u00a0\u201cEscape from L.A.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the role of Hershe Las Palmas, a trans woman and past criminal associate of Snake\u00a0Plissken, Grier came equipped with a zucchini concealed in her trousers as\u00a0she danced up a storm to James Brown’s\u00a0\u201cPopcorn.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end,\u00a0Grier’s\u00a0behind the scenes\u00a0story was far better than the actual\u00a0movie.<\/p>\n

\"Misha<\/span><\/div>\n

Misha Collins, who played angel Castiel on “Supernatural,” cast a spell on the Rhode Island Comic Con crowd.<\/p>\n

Super unprepared for <\/strong>‘Supernatural<\/strong>‘<\/h2>\n

Misha Collins,\u00a0Rob Benedict,\u00a0Richard\u00a0Speightur\u00a0Jr. and\u00a0Kathryn Newton\u00a0confessed that none of them were\u00a0remotely\u00a0familiar with\u00a0\u201cSupernatural\u201d when they landed\u00a0their respective parts\u00a0on the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u00a0was a bus stop that had a\u00a0poster of ‘Supernatural’\u00a0behind a glass and I thought If these\u00a0(expletives) can get a TV show, why\u00a0can’t\u00a0I?\u201d\u00a0Collins\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cNot long after that I had an\u00a0audition … And I still\u00a0hadn’t\u00a0watch\u00a0the show when I started filming it which I think\u00a0comes\u00a0across in my performance. My character is clearly in a different show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins continued, saying, \u201cWhen\u00a0they\u00a0said,\u00a0‘Hey, you want\u00a0to go play a janitor.’\u00a0I\u00a0said\u00a0sure.\u00a0I was\u00a0late in\u00a0reading the script and I was reading the script on an airplane. I was\u00a0like,\u00a0hold\u00a0the phone. This is no normal janitor. This janitor has special powers,\u201d\u00a0Speightur\u00a0recalled.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0did a table read with the conference call box in the middle of the table and\u00a0(show creator)\u00a0Eric\u00a0(Kripe)\u00a0is on that\u00a0phone.\u00a0And Eric\u00a0starts\u00a0giving instructions\u00a0on how to keep the show on track while adding\u00a0the\u00a0humor\u00a0but\u00a0he’s\u00a0only using\u00a0the word ‘Supernatural’ as an adjective and an adverb.\u00a0So\u00a0he’s\u00a0like,\u00a0be\u00a0sure you keep the ‘Supernatural’ elements.\u00a0Make sure your choices are very\u00a0‘Supernatural.’\u00a0It’s\u00a0a very ‘Supernaturally’ focused theme.\u00a0I’m\u00a0like\u00a0you’re\u00a0not\u00a0helping\u00a0buddy.\u00a0You’re\u00a0only using the title of the\u00a0show to describe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Likewise, Newton was largely unfamiliar with the franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in high school when I got the audition for\u00a0‘Supernatural.’ And I was on the golf team and one of my best friends and\u00a0teammates\u00a0was also named Sam Winchester.\u00a0So\u00a0you can imagine,\u201d\u00a0Newton said.\u00a0\u201cAnd I wanted to impress my\u00a0friends\u00a0… that’s\u00a0really why\u00a0I wanted the job … Before the audition\u00a0my friends\u00a0filled me in.\u00a0They started screaming.\u00a0You’re\u00a0Castiel’s\u00a0daughter. And they told me the whole lineage\u00a0and everything.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

Ricos R-Rated Roughnecks!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The \u201cStarship Troopers\u201d\u00a0reunion panel\u00a0certainly\u00a0didn’t\u00a0disappoint. With two profanity-laced loose cannons on each end\u00a0of the couch\u00a0in the guise of\u00a0Seth Gilliam\u00a0and Michael Ironside, who\u00a0rapid-fire barrage of snappy answers and biting insults\u00a0was absolutely hysterical and extremely off-colored,\u00a0and moderator\u00a0Lewis Perry\u00a0of “The\u00a0Angrygeeks\u00a0Show” keeping things moving while standing clear of the verbal shrapnel, this was the panel to beat.<\/p>\n

When he\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0playfully berating the\u00a0audience\u00a0questions, Ironside shared\u00a0genuine\u00a0insight and\u00a0wisdom\u00a0about the movie\u00a0and director Paul\u00a0Verhoeven’s\u00a0vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe original book is a right-wing manifesto. And Paul,\u00a0being\u00a0raised in post-war\u00a0Europe,\u00a0he\u00a0did the film as an absolute satire. And the rest of the world saw that,\u201d\u00a0Ironside said.\u00a0\u201cThe U.S.\u00a0finally caught\u00a0on\u00a0that it was a satire. You have Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris)\u00a0putting his hand on a\u00a0bug’s\u00a0(expletive).\u00a0‘It’s\u00a0in pain.’\u00a0And everyone\u00a0cheers.\u00a0It’s\u00a0satire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Casper<\/span><\/div>\n

Casper Van Dien, who played Johnny Rico in “Starship Troopers,” holds up a copy of the Telegram & Gazette promoting his appearance at the Rhode Island Comic Con.<\/p>\n

Ironside said during the press junket, they were often asked questions like\u00a0\u201cAre you pro-Nazis?\u201d \u201dWhy are you wearing Nazi uniforms?\u201d\u00a0and the actor would say,\u00a0\u201cDid\u00a0you see the same (expletive) movie we made?\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast was asked their least favorite\u00a0bug\u00a0and their answers were\u00a0bed bugs (Ironside), black widow (Denise Richards), potato bugs (Patrick Muldoon\u00a0and\u00a0Jake Busey), computer bugs (Casper Van Dien), water bugs\u00a0(Dina\u00a0Meyer)\u00a0and the\u00a0ladybugs\u00a0(Gilliam,\u00a0who said\u00a0\u201c\u201dJust\u00a0(expletive) your spots!\u00a0\u201d).<\/p>\n

When asked about\u00a0who had your\u00a0favorite death\u00a0scene\u00a0other than yourself,\u00a0Meyer said Muldoon’s\u00a0character, while\u00a0Muldoon re-enacted his fatal demise by a cranium-sucking Brain Bug, while shrugging, \u201dI’ve\u00a0never been the same since.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gilliam’s answer was much more direct\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u201cAre you asking me who is my favorite death besides my death? Why the (expletive) should I care about\u00a0another person’s\u00a0death?\u00a0As soon I died, the movie was over.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n

After Meyer’s character\u00a0died after\u00a0spending \u201c20 minutes with Rico,\u201d\u00a0Van Dien said\u00a0that\u00a0was a\u00a0\u201cbig\u00a0moment,\u201d\u00a0which Meyer interjected,\u00a0\u201cIt\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0that big.\u201d<\/p>\n
