He sits out there in a wooden chair behind the big house on the Granbury Highway south of Weatherford with his boots kicked up on another chair he’s pulled up, waiting for them each night after Carrie’s asleep, on a landscape so dark you can’t see your nose in front of your face, only the orange hissing glow of his American Spirit floating around in the blackness whenever he sucks and the smoke goes into his lungs, which by the way are clean as can be, the doctor said so after a full-body scan and blood work and all the rest of it, even though he’s been smoking since he was nineteen with only a couple breaks and he just turned seventy this summer.

Limpy walks on three legs. He puts out three bowls of food every night, but they all want to eat out of the same bowl for some damn reason, some kind of competitive deal. And the way racoons push each other out of the way is they use their asses to nudge each other back, because if they jostle each other from the front, there’s gonna be a fight, and they’re too hungry to fight. He named them. The possum who comes later doesn’t have a name, but he’ll sure as shit show up too. One night he forgot to feed them and Rocky came wobbling right up to him, big fat bristly body on those stubby legs, looking at him with those yellow reflective eyes like, Hey, bub, where’s the chow?

Zackery Michael

Thornton, photographed in New York City in November. They’re funny, and he sits alone in the darkness watching them.

This is good. It’s a tough way to go through life, trying to be truly happy when true happiness is your biggest fear, because what if something happens again like what happened to Jimmy? In October 1988, Billy’s brother Jimmy died suddenly. Jimmy was thirty and Billy was thirty-three. Jimmy was Billy’s best friend. They watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan together. They played music together, started bands together. They got beat up by their father together. Her name is tattooed on his left arm. His arms are strong and he doesn’t look seventy, doesn’t feel seventy. He knows guys his age who see the world from wheelchairs or walk with canes. He’s virile, and he’s sharp, and to Tommy Norris and every other part he plays, he brings wisdom, a world-weary way with people, and a little bit of pain, all accumulated over the decades, and you just believe him.

Zackery Michael

You’ll never hear a complaint come out of Billy Bob Thornton’s mouth about where he is or what he’s achieved. The problem is, he knows he’ll never be as good as Frederic March, the first and greatest naturalistic actor, knows he’ll never be as good as the Beatles, and knows he’ll never, ever be as happy as he was before Jimmy died.
