Who can resist a bad girl?<\/p>\n
Breakthrough Theatre Company<\/a> will revive \u201cRedlight: The Bad Girls of Broadway,\u201d one of its biggest hits and the show that put the theater on the map at the Orlando Fringe Festival back in the day. The musical revue of familiar Broadway hits, for adults only, opens Nov. 14.<\/p>\n Breakthough owner Wade Hair didn\u2019t know what he was unleashing when he staged the first version of the show in his theater\u2019s early years.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a one-weekend cabaret-style show,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was such a hit I thought, \u2018Why don\u2019t we take out the serious songs, keep all the fun and sexy songs and apply to Fringe?’\u201d<\/p>\n The show was the talk of the 2012 Fringe festival.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were the only show that year that sold out every single performance,\u201d Hair says. \u201cI was so proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n From the Orlando Sentinel review that year<\/a>: \u201cAs the opening \u2018Big Spender\u2019 says: \u2018Do ya wanna have fun? How about a few laughs\u2019\u201d This dirty little revue will show you a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n The 2025 version of \u201cRedlight\u201d will still open with \u201cBig Spender\u201d (from \u201cSweet Charity\u201d) and include popular favorites such as \u201cThe Cell Block Tango\u201d from \u201cChicago\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Tell Mama\u201d from \u201cCabaret\u201d \u2014 \u201cThat\u2019s always a crowd favorite,\u201d Hair says.<\/p>\n But in other ways the show, which features a new cast of performers, will be quite different. To create a more immersive experience, Hair has turned his theater into the \u201cRedlight Lounge,\u201d with a chandelier, poles for dancing and tables and chairs throughout.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve never done that before,\u201d he says. \u201cThe ladies will be all around you.\u201d<\/p>\n For shyer audience members, there will be traditional seating farther back as well.<\/p>\n And keep in mind, it is a theater \u2014 not a sleazier type of venue. So the performers won\u2019t touch the audience members and \u201ceach curtain speech will include the reminder \u2018Do not touch the performers,’\u201d Hair says.<\/p>\n Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks will be available to enjoy at the tables.<\/p>\n Another change from 2012: The song list has been updated with newer showtunes, like the catchy \u201cLet\u2019s Be Bad\u201d from \u201cSmash\u201d and the dancey \u201cLa Dee Dah with You\u201d from \u201cThe Great Gatsby.\u201d<\/p>\n Angela Cotto is music director and choreographer. Mary Lee Stallings is handling the costumes, which are being designed with the performers\u2019 comfort level in mind.<\/p>\n Local talent takes the stage in \u2018Gator Bites,\u2019 Q Fest Orlando<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not a strip club,\u201d Hair says. \u201cIt\u2019s a female-power show, I think. We\u2019re saying, \u2018What clothes make you feel beautiful? What do you feel comfortable in?\u201d<\/p>\n A few guys are in the cast as well.<\/p>\n \u201cThey started as props,\u201d Hair jokes. \u201cBut now they have their own songs.\u201d<\/p>\n The men will feature in such gender-bending tunes as \u201cSweet Transvestite\u201d from \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show\u201d and \u201cTwo Ladies\u201d from \u201cCabaret.\u201d<\/p>\n Reviving the show is something of a full-circle moment for Hair.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Redlight\u2019 slipped into Fringe before there were so many burlesque shows,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were just at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n The show led Jaimz Dillman, a last-minute addition to the production, to form the longrunning Corsets & Cuties troupe after Fringe ended. Risa Risque, whose first Fringe show was \u201cRedlight,\u201d also formed a burlesque troupe \u2014 the Blacklist Babes Cabaret \u2014 after the show, helping ignite a burlesque boom in Central Florida.<\/p>\n Corsets & Cuties performed its final Fringe show in May \u2014 and when Hair attended, it gave him the idea of a \u201cRedlight: The Bad Girls of Broadway\u201d revival.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were inspired by us, and now we were inspired by them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Ultimately, Hair says, despite the titilation factor, the music is what sells the show.<\/p>\n \u201cThese songs are timeless,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople love them.\u201d<\/p>\n Follow me at facebook.com\/matthew.j.palm<\/a> or email me at mpalm@orlandosentinel.com<\/a>.
