Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will star in and produce an untitled movie musical based on Lewis Carroll\u2019s \u201cAlice in Wonderland\u201d for Universal Pictures, her first major studio film, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n Carpenter\u2019s specific role in the film remains undisclosed, but sources describe the project as \u201ca passion project\u201d for the global pop star, the report said.<\/p>\n Lorene Scafaria will write and direct the feature. Scafaria is best known for writing and directing \u201cHustlers,\u201d the Jennifer Lopez-starring crime drama, the report said.<\/p>\n Carroll\u2019s Victorian-era story follows a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and lands in a fantastical world of talking animals. The tale has been adapted multiple times, including as a Disney animated movie in 1951 and a Tim Burton-directed film in 2010 that starred Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.<\/p>\n According to the outlet, while this marks Carpenter\u2019s first major studio film, the \u201cEspresso\u201d singer has previous acting experience. Her credits include the films \u201cThe Hate U Give\u201d and \u201cEmergency,\u201d as well as the TV series \u201cGirl Meets World.\u201d She also recently signed on to guest star in a \u201cMuppet Show\u201d special for Disney+.<\/p>\n Carpenter\u2019s film project comes as she just earned six Grammy Award nominations. These include album of the year and best pop vocal album for \u201cMan\u2019s Best Friend,\u201d and song of the year, record of the year, best pop solo performance and best music video for \u201cManchild.\u201d<\/p>\n
