Khadijah James, Maxine Shaw \u201cattorney at law,\u201d and Synclaire James-Jones all sat down to talk about the groundbreaking \u201990s sitcom on Fox.<\/p>\n
The New Jersey native opened up about her first impression of the now classic Fox series.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always thought it was going to be a hit,\u201d Latifah told Alexander. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have even signed up. I only signed up and committed to things that I was fully committed to, but I knew we had something. I mean, that was the goal, to create something successful.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also touted the cast for helping it become a hit.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce we got ya\u2019ll, I was already like \u2018Okay, we\u2019ve got Kim Coles, this is crazy.\u2019 Yvette (the show\u2019s creator, Yvette Lee Bowser) was on the come-up, and you (pointing at Alexander), and then Kim Fields, are you kidding me!?\u201d<\/p>\n
Latifah played Khadijah, who was the editor and publisher of the fictional magazine \u201cFlavor.\u201d Coles played her cousin Synclaire, and Alexander played Maxine, the sharp-witted attorney who was Khadijah\u2019s best friend from college.<\/p>\n
Prior to the show, audiences knew Coles from the sketch comedy show \u201cIn Living Color,\u201d while Fields was most famous for her role in \u201cThe Facts of Life.\u201d Alexander, who auditioned for the series, joked that she was \u201cfound off the street, like an urchin.\u201d<\/p>\n
Latifah corrected her, calling her a \u201cprofessional maverick, kingdom, queendom urchin.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u201cU.N.I.T.Y.\u201d\u00a0singer also said the success of Martin Lawrence\u2019s show \u201cMartin,\u201d which was on the same network, helped them thrive.<\/p>\n
\u201cFox being like this kind of burgeoning network, trying to become the fourth network, that was like space for us to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before the series, Latifah was known as a rapper and toured with Will Smith. It wasn\u2019t until Smith landed the sitcom \u201cThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air\u201d that she realized she could transition from music to television.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Will could do it, we can do it,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo, we just started kicking around ideas like, how can we make this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n
From there, the ball got rolling, and television was eventually made.<\/p>\n
The series followed six single friends living in brownstone apartment in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Khadijah and Synclaire lived with Regina \u201cR\u00e9gine\u201d Hunter, played by Kim Coles. Two male tenants lived across the hall: Kyle Barker, played by T.C. Carson, and Overtone Wakefield Jones, played by John Henton.<\/p>\n
Some have often said the NBC hit show \u201cFriends\u201d ripped off \u201cLiving Single,\u201d which has become an age-old debate.<\/p>\n
In 2017, it was brought up when Latifah appeared on \u201cWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.\u201d When she was asked if there would ever be a \u201cLiving Single\u201d reboot, co-guest Jason Sudeikis said, \u201cI thought \u2018Friends\u2019 was the reboot.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, you know about that too,\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m paying attention,\u201d the Ted Lasso star said.<\/p>\n
From there, \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d star said her show pioneered the concept \u201cFriends\u201d has often been touted for originating.<\/p>\n
\u201cLiving Single\u201d debuted in 1993 and ran for five seasons. \u201cFriends\u201d debuted in 1994 and aired for 10 seasons.<\/p>\n
