The sequel to the 2006 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/movie\">movie<\/a> will follow the travails of the Runway editor, Miranda Priestly (played by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/meryl-streep\">Meryl Streep<\/a>) as she tackles the decline of print media and sees competition for her newest rival, Emily Charlton (played by Emily Blunt).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The trailer, which was dropped on November 12, shows Priestly\u2019s character strutting powerfully in her iconic red stilettos, before being joined by Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) in the elevator. While the trailer has already generated over 3.5 million views on YouTube at the time of writing, social media users were quick to share their Priestly-esque critiques. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Embed_embedWrapper__rftvU wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio embed-youtube\" style=\"width:100%;margin:0 auto\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Devil Wears Prada 2 | Teaser Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9c-DrMe8o5Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Indeed, many have taken to TikTok to question the shoe choice in particular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">TikTok user Lillie Rohan (@newswithlils) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@newswithlils\/video\/7571933137844981014\">called it<\/a> a \u201cdiabolical move\u201d to put the indomitable editor in the Valentino Rockstud shoe in 2025. Rohan, 28, told <em>Newsweek<\/em> that it was \u201ca jolting experience\u201d to see such an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/woman-answers-gen-z-question-millennial-fashion-heels-2051934\">outmoded shoe<\/a> take center stage in the trailer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cWe\u2019re so used to Miranda being this chic, sophisticated woman, and suddenly she\u2019s in heels that should have been retired after the 2013 clubbing era,\u201d Rohan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cBut then again, maybe it means something. Maybe the shoes are a metaphor for where Miranda sits in the fashion world now. Or maybe they\u2019re <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/trending\">trending<\/a> again and I genuinely have no idea what I\u2019m talking about, which my comment section has pointed out.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Embed_embedWrapper__rftvU  embed-loading\">\n<div class=\"embed-loading-content\">\n<p>Loading <!-- -->tiktok<!-- --> content&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">It\u2019s long been thought that Priestly\u2019s character was based on Anna Wintour, the legendary editor-in-chief of <em>Vogue<\/em> magazine. But Amy Odell, the <em>New York Times<\/em> bestselling author of <em>ANNA: The Biography<\/em>, said that she \u201ccan\u2019t unsee these shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@amyodellwriter\/video\/7572069655053880606\">Posting on TikTok<\/a>, @amyodellwriter, Odell said that Priestly\u2019s fashion doesn\u2019t directly resemble Wintour\u2019s style, but the red Valentino shoes are \u201ckind of a choice\u201d nonetheless. She also noted that on-screen fashion has become bigger and bolder in recent years (citing shows such as <em>Emily in Paris<\/em>, <em>Just Like That<\/em> and everybody\u2019s newest TV obsession, <em>All\u2019s Fair<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Not everyone slated the shoe however, as TikTok user Joshua Chenault (@joshuachenault) defended the fashion statement. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@joshuachenault\/video\/7572030061113593119\">He blasted<\/a> the so-called \u201cfashion critics\u201d for questioning why Priestly would wear a shoe that was popular in the early 2010s, as he suggests that Priestly doesn\u2019t follow trends\u2014she sets them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Lest we forget the societal importance of the cerulean belt after all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Chenault said: \u201cWhy would she not be wearing a shoe that no one else is thinking of right now? It originally underscored the Roman house\u2019s connection to classical history\u2014establishing the Valentino brand as part of the wider Roman legacy. I can see why the costume team would choose this shoe. There\u2019s a lot to unpack in the Valentino designs of that era,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">When it comes to high fashion, Ossant says there is no such thing as outdated. If anything, the value and desirability only increase as time goes on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cThis teaser trailer has already inspired the kind of footwear we\u2019ll likely see in 2026,\u201d Ossant said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">For such a short trailer, there have certainly been plenty of talking points. Aside from shoe-gate, others have been quite to highlight that the film is set for release just days before next year\u2019s Met Gala\u2014surely not a coincidence?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Not the mention, seeing Sachs dare to step into the same elevator as Priestly has raised some eyebrows.
