Charli XCX<\/a> has announced a new album. The follow-up to Brat<\/em><\/a> and its spinoffs is called Wuthering Heights<\/em><\/a>, and it is out on February 13 via Atlantic<\/a>. Below, listen to a new song from the album called \u201cChains of Love<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the title suggests, Wuthering Heights<\/em> was born from Charli XCX\u2019s work with Emerald Fennell on the filmmaker\u2019s new adaptation<\/a> of the famed Emily Bront\u00eb novel. \u201cI called Emerald and asked her what she was hoping for from my read of the script,\u201d the British musician explained on Substack<\/a>. \u201cShe coyly suggested \u2018A song?\u2019 and I suggested \u2018An album?\u2019 because why not? I wanted to dive into persona, into a world that felt undeniably raw, wild, sexual, gothic, British, tortured and full of actual real sentences, punctuation and grammar. Without a cigarette or a pair of sunglasses in sight, it was all totally other from the life I was currently living. I was fucking IN.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charli XCX also wrote about how she made Wuthering Heights<\/em> primarily with Finn Keane, the British producer and songwriter formerly known as Easyfun<\/a>. \u201cFrom the very start of our process we were discussing the Todd Hayne\u2019s documentary about The Velvet Underground and in particular this one quote from John Cale where he describes that the main sonic rule of creating songs for the band was that all things had to be both \u2018elegant and brutal,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cWe started to live by this description as we created songs for the Wuthering Heights album throughout most of this year. Finn came with me on tour and we rented a studio space most days.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 12-song Wuthering Heights<\/em> opens with \u201cHouse<\/a>,\u201d Charli XCX\u2019s recent collaboration with Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale. The album follows Brat<\/em>, the deluxe expansion Brat and It\u2019s the Same but There\u2019s Three More Songs So It\u2019s Not<\/em><\/a>, and the remix album Brat and It\u2019s Completely Different but Also Still Brat<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n
