Christopher Nolan revealed to Empire magazine<\/a> that he \u201cshot over 2 million feet of film\u201d during the making of \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d which filmed for 91 days earlier this year. The movie is Nolan\u2019s adaptation of Homer\u2019s Greek epic and marks his follow-up project to \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d which won Nolan the Oscars for best picture and director.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a filmmaker, you\u2019re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven\u2019t been done before,\u201d Nolan told the publication and why he chose to turn Homer\u2019s \u201cOdyssey\u201d into a movie. \u201cAnd what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with \u2013 Ray Harryhausen movies and other things \u2013 I\u2019d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Matt Damon reunites with Nolan after \u201cInterstellar\u201d and \u201cOppenheimer\u201d to headline \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in the lead role of Odysseus. Tom Holland plays his son, Telemachus. The sprawling ensemble also includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal.<\/p>\n In typical Nolan fashion, the filming of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d was \u201cpretty primal\u201d as the cast and crew shot on as many real locations as possible. This included shooting on the open ocean.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s vast and terrifying and wonderful and benevolent, as the conditions shift,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cWe really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people. And the leap of faith that was being made in an unmapped, uncharted world\u2026 By embracing the physicality of the real world in the making of the film, you do inform the telling of the story in interesting ways. Because you\u2019re confronted on a daily basis by the world pushing back at you.\u201d<\/p>\n Damon told Empire magazine<\/a> that \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d will be \u201cexactly what you want of a summer movie,\u201d adding: \u201cIt should be the most massively entertaining film.
