We all only have one wild and precious life to live, and while James A. Garfield<\/a> couldn\u2019t spend any of his watching a Netflix<\/a> miniseries, director Matt Ross<\/a> wants any story we do spend two or four or 10 hours on to be worth it. Ross immediately knew he\u2019d found such a story on reading Mike Makowsky<\/a>\u2019s script for \u201cDeath by Lightning<\/a>,\u201d which follows both Garfield<\/a> (Michael Shannon<\/a>) and his eventual assassin Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen<\/a>) from the former\u2019s surprise nomination for President at the 1880 Republican National Convention through the latter\u2019s hanging for murder. He wanted to take on the challenge of making the visual storytelling feel as immediate, surprising, and modern as Makowsky\u2019s script read.<\/p>\n
