Ozzy Osbourne was forced to return to the hospital before his legendary<\/a> farewell concert<\/a>, his family revealed in the first episode of The Osbournes Podcast since the metal legend\u2019s death<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n Osbourne\u2019s wife, Sharon, and two children, Jack and Kelly, offered an emotional recap of the final months <\/a>of the musician\u2019s life, sharing new details about his myriad medical issues and determination to play one last gig. Osbourne died July 22 at the age of 76, just a few weeks after his \u201cBack to the Beginning\u201d farewell concert on July 5.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n Osbourne had spent much of the preceding months battling an array of ailments<\/a>, but the family had not previously disclosed his stay in the hospital just two weeks before the \u201cBack to the Beginning\u201d show. While they didn\u2019t say what exactly put Osbourne in the hospital, they emphasized how important it was to keep the stay under wraps ahead of the show.<\/p>\n Sharon said the family was \u201cterrified that people were going to find out,\u201d so they gave very specific instructions (and even photographs of known visitors) to hospital staff and security to make sure no one came snooping around.<\/p>\n Then, someone showed up looking for a \u201cJohn Osbourne\u201d (Ozzy\u2019s real name), claiming to be his brother. Sharon said she believed this person was a reporter, because not even Osbourne\u2019s actual brothers knew he was in the hospital. Security were sent to assess the situation, and it turned out the man was the brother of a different John Osbourne also staying in the same hospital.<\/p>\n \u201cDaddy was hysterical laughing,\u201d Sharon said of Osbourne\u2019s reaction to the mishap.<\/p>\n While Osbourne was dogged by medical issues<\/a> during his final years \u2014 many of them stemming from a late-night fall in 2019 \u2014 Sharon, Jack, and Kelly said the last seven months were especially grueling. Last December, they revealed, he fell and fractured another vertebrae, then contracted pneumonia in the hospital.<\/p>\n He eventually underwent a surgery to address his spinal pain, only to wind up with pneumonia again, as well as sepsis. Other ailments included blood clots, the beginnings of emphysema, a damaged spine, Parkinson\u2019s, a collapsed lung, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a condition caused by damage to the lungs), and heart problems.<\/p>\n Sharon admitted that she thought her husband might not survive his battle with sepsis, especially because of the debilitating antibiotics treatment it required. \u201cIt was draining every ounce of strength he had, and it was in March that we thought we were going to lose him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n It was also around this time that there was talk of canceling the \u201cBack to the Beginning\u201d concert. But Osbourne was resolute about going ahead with the show. \u201cHe wanted to say, \u2018Thank you,\u2019\u201d Kelly said. \u201cThat meant more to him than anything in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe human spirit is stronger than anything, and he was so determined \u2014 he was so determined to go do his show,\u201d Sharon added. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t going to give up on it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe didn\u2019t want to go out not doing it, and it was the best medicine for him,\u201d said Jack.<\/p>\n Despite Osbourne\u2019s determination, the family shared a few laughs as they recalled Ozzy\u2019s grumpiness as he prepared. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard so many, \u2018Fuck off, get out of here, fuck off,\u2019 in my life,\u201d Sharon cracked. \u201cAnd every other day, \u2018Cancel the show, I\u2019m not doing it,\u2019\u201d Jack noted. \u201cAnd then he\u2019d be like, \u2018No, no, no don\u2019t cancel it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The Osbournes said Ozzy was overwhelmed at how many people showed up for the final gig, and the massive reaction it engendered among fans. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t believe the reviews and people\u2019s reactions to the show,\u201d Sharon said. \u201cHe was just like in awe. And when I say, he didn\u2019t realize how many people loved him as a person \u2014 not as the frontman of Black Sabbath or as his own thing \u2014 it was just his being. People loved him. He never got it. He had no understanding of it whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n The family also said they thought the energy Osbourne got from the gig would give him an extra jolt of strength, and even Sharon admitted that she \u201cdidn\u2019t see him going as quickly as he went.\u201d Kelly, however, said she believed Osbourne knew, even if everyone else did not.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s only in retrospect that I see that now,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause he started saying things to me that I think he was preparing me for when he wasn\u2019t going to be here.
