There is no denying the fact that the movie industry has changed since the pandemic, as well as the increased use of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Due to these factors, companies like Disney may be aiming to \u2018play it safe\u2019 to ensure they do well in box office sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amirreza Fazli, Professor of Marketing at Loyola says, \u201cFrom a business perspective, nostalgia is a shortcut to attention. In a world where hundreds of new shows and films launch every month, a familiar title instantly cuts through the noise.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hasn\u2019t always been the case though. There have been many reboots that have suffered from large box office losses. Forbes journalist <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/carolinereid\/2024\/09\/15\/disneys-little-mermaid-plunges-to-5-million-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caroline Reid <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documented that \u2018The Little Mermaid\u2019 (2023), for example, \u201clost an estimated $4.9 million at the box office.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, even if a film performs poorly at the box office, there is still tons of potential for profit, especially for films produced by Disney. Fazli says that for companies like Disney, box office performances are not the end-all be-all when it comes to deeming a film successful or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach title fuels theme-park experiences, merchandise, streaming subscriptions, and cross-promotions with other Disney brands. The payoff extends far beyond box-office revenue,\u201d Fazli said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X, there has been a lot of discourse regarding rebooted films and sequels recently. Projects like \u2018Lilo And Stitch\u2019 (2025) and \u2018The Little Mermaid\u2019 (2023) were faced with a lot of backlash upon their releases. Despite this online backlash, some of these rebooted movies have still done well in the box office. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/lilo-stitch-1-billion-box-office\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Lilo And Stitch\u2019 (2025)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example, hit $1 billion at the global box office and was the first Motion Picture Association title of 2025 to do so, becoming a huge accomplishment for Disney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA well-crafted film and strong word-of-mouth often outlast initial negativity, especially when the product ultimately delivers on quality,\u201d Fazli said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Films that rely heavily, or even entirely, on nostalgia may very well resonate with target audiences enough for the film to make a large profit. In film, nostalgia acts as a way to emotionally comfort the film\u2019s target audience in a way that motivates them enough to buy a ticket and sit down to watch that film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter seeing \u2018Freakier Friday\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in theaters, I became very reminiscent of my childhood years at home because \u2018Freaky Friday\u2019 was one of my most-watched movies when I was kid.
