Lady Gaga<\/a> revealed in a new interview that she was taking lithium while filming the 2018 hit movie \u201cA Star Is Born.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Rolling Stone<\/a> profile published on Thursday, Nov. 13, the \u201cJust Dance\u201d crooner told the outlet that she was taking the mood stabilizer during filming and felt she might not recover. While lithium is commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder, Gaga did not publicly disclose a specific diagnosis.<\/p>\n

After filming wrapped, the effects of lithium started to catch up with her as she embarked on her \u201cJoanne\u201d world tour. Gaga \u2014 whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta \u2014 then suffered a psychotic break, which led her to cancel her \u2018Joanne\u2019 world tour six months in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was one day that my sister said to me, \u2018I don\u2019t see my sister anymore,\u2019 and I canceled the tour,\u201d Gaga told the outlet. \u201cThere was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn\u2019t do anything. \u2026 I completely crashed. It was really scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Gaga recounted to Rolling Stone that she didn\u2019t think she \u201ccould get better.\u201d Gaga added, \u201c I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the singer\u2019s struggles persisted into the creation of her 2020 album \u201cChromatica.\u201d When she met her now-fianc\u00e9, Michael Polansky, in December 2019, Gaga was still abusing substances. \u201cI was as great as I could be for someone that smoked weed all day, knocked back a couple bottles of wine and passed out,\u201d she said, adding that she was also smoking three packs of cigarettes a day.<\/p>\n

Polansky, a 42-year-old tech entrepreneur, observed her state during that period. \u201cThe piece that I always noticed was how disempowered she felt \u2014 not in charge of her own life,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI\u2019d never met somebody so incredibly talented and gifted feel so disempowered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gaga credits Polansky with helping her through that difficult time. \u201cHe wanted to take care of me, and I\u2019ve never been loved that way,\u201d she said. \u201cHe helped me see that my life was precious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA Star Is Born,\u201d which Gaga filmed alongside Bradley Cooper, follows the tragic love story of Jackson Maine, a seasoned musician, who discovers and falls in love with a struggling singer, Ally. But as Ally\u2019s career takes off, Jackson\u2019s life deteriorates due to his battle with alcoholism and addiction, creating a tragic contrast between her fame and his decline.<\/p>\n

The film was nominated for 24 awards in 2019, winning the Academy Award for best original song for \u201cShallow,\u201d the BAFTA Award for best original music, and the Golden Globe for best original song in a motion picture for \u201cShallow.\u201d<\/p>\n
