Adult tickets are priced at 1,500 yen (US$10) by pre-sale or 1,700 yen at the door, which is a bit on the high side for museum admission in Japan, but doesn\u2019t feel exorbitant, considering the care required in preserving the items inside.<\/p>\n<p>And like many museums, the Tokyo National Museum, which is operated by a government-owned corporation, periodically has donation drives and crowdfunding campaigns. The purpose of its latest one is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way, though, since <strong>the museum is looking for handouts to cover the cost of removing its pond and replacing it with a space to be used for beer gardens and music events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!3m2!1sja!2sjp!4v1763013584235!5m2!1sja!2sjp!6m8!1m7!1sIJbe6l9kmS9zUvzCH60M3A!2m2!1d35.71801488399605!2d139.7760303957705!3f357.58395599454474!4f3.8518101924360764!5f1.2862810513484737\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The pond, shown above, is<strong> located in front of the museum\u2019s Main Building, or Honkan<\/strong>, which was constructed between 1932 and 1938. The Tokyo National Museum was Japan\u2019s first national museum, and as a government-affiliated facility, <strong>many are saying that hosting loud, booze-fueled events is an inappropriate use of its grounds<\/strong>. Adding insult to injury, in detractors\u2019 eyes, is that <strong>not only is the Tokyo National Museum planning to pave over the pond, it\u2019s asking the public for donations to fund the Tohaku Open Park Project<\/strong>, and is currently accepting donations through its website.<\/p>\n<p>All of this has led to such angry online comments as:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cSo they\u2019re just spending money to destroy something of value? I have no idea why they think the National Museum needs to hold concerts and beer garden events.\u201d<\/em><br \/><em>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen one of these redevelopment \u2018projects\u2019 that actually feels like an improvement. It\u2019s always just some cliched eyesore that messes up the local scenery and environment.\u201d<\/em><br \/><em>\u201cYou don\u2019t go to a museum to drink beer and listen to music. The museum is supposed to be our nation\u2019s greatest treasure trove of knowledge, so let it be that, there\u2019s no need to try to attract everyone and everybody. If it\u2019s a place where people who want to connect with the knowledge of people from prior parts of history, that\u2019s all it needs to be.\u201d<\/em><br \/><em>\u201cPlease keep the plaza as the quiet, beautiful place that it\u2019s always been.\u201d<\/em><br \/><em>\u201cOh, so they\u2019re just doing this to hold events and get more money? Pitiful.\u201d<\/em><br \/><em>\u201cIf they\u2019re going to abandon their pride as a museum, they should just go all the way with it. Put in a sake corner where you can drink in front of the Buddhist statues on display. Use the National Treasure katanas to cut tuna sashimi\u2026Just leave the existing fa\u00e7ade, hollow the interior out, and build a modern entertainment complex on top of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Comments in favor of the plan have been much fewer and farther between, but those that have been made contend that the museum\u2019s pond is less than majestic in appearance, and others speculate that the cost of maintaining it isn\u2019t worth the marginal aesthetic boost it provides.
