The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum<\/a><\/strong> is mourning the loss of one of its most influential leaders. Bill Ivey<\/strong> \u2014 who served as CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum from 1971 to 1997 \u2014 died in Nashville on November 7. He was 81.<\/p>\n The museum announced the news in a detailed Facebook tribute<\/a>, calling Ivey a \u201cchallenging thinker\u201d whose impact on the institution and the arts world was \u201cincalculable.\u201d<\/p>\n Born in Detroit in 1944, Ivey earned a degree in history from the University of Michigan and a master\u2019s degree in folklore and ethnomusicology from Indiana University. By fall of that year, he had been promoted to director of the CMF, beginning a 26-year tenure that reshaped the museum entirely.<\/p>\n During his leadership, the Hall of Fame:<\/p>\n Expanded its staff, archives and collections<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Earned national accreditation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Underwent multiple building expansions<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Acquired Hatch Show Print in 1992<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n The museum credits Ivey with elevating it from a \u201cmodest tourist attraction\u201d into the country\u2019s leading center for the preservation and study of country music history.<\/p>\n In December 1997, President Bill Clinton<\/strong> appointed Ivey chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, where he served for four years. He later became director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University and taught there until 2012.<\/p>\n He also held multiple influential roles across the broader arts and recording world, including President of the Recording Academy, Chair of the Recording Academy\u2019s board of trustees and President of the American Folklore Society<\/p>\n Ivey co-founded Leadership Music in 1989, wrote liner notes for numerous historical recordings and albums, published scholarly articles, and authored three books about culture, politics, and the arts.<\/p>\n Fans, colleagues and friends filled the comment section of the Hall of Fame\u2019s Facebook post with tributes to Ivey\u2019s life and work.<\/p>\n “I am stricken \u2014 he was a treasured friend and a great NEA Chair. We stirred up a lot of good things together in DC,” wrote one friend.<\/p>\n Another fan shared, “Such a kind and gentle person.
