It\u2019s been said a million times at this point, but Sydney Sweeney\u2019s cinematic fall from Hollywood It Girl to MAGA-pandering<\/a>, Bezos-elbow-rubbing<\/a>, Scooter-Braun-kissing<\/a> Florida Republican has been nothing short of Shakespearean.<\/p>\n

This week, Sweeney\u2019s public image suffered at least three more blows: her latest film, Christy, was reported to have one of the worst box office debuts<\/a> of all time; there are rumors of a possible beef<\/a> between Sweeney and her Euphoria co-star Zendaya, reportedly due to Sweeney\u2019s seemingly shitty politics; and Ruby Rose just KO\u2019d Sweeney on Threads, adding more insult to more injury. This does nothing to quell my belief that nothing good ever comes from being a Florida Republican.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure Sweeney is fine and is possibly still lip-locked<\/a> with Braun in Central Park, but I, personally, would never want to show my face outside of Florida ever again after reading Rose\u2019s post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,\u201d Rose wrote on Threads<\/a>. \u201cI was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It\u2019s part of why I stayed in acting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney\u2019s film is based on the rise of the champion boxer, who was also a victim of domestic violence, and was shot and stabbed by her coach-turned-husband-turned-ex-husband in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the \u2018people\u2019. None of \u2018the people\u2019 want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,\u201d Rose continued. \u201cYou\u2019re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.\u201d Brutal. I feel like Rose called\u00a0me a cretin.<\/p>\n

Martin has spoken about knowing she was a lesbian<\/a> since the \u201c5th or 6th grade,\u201d and has long been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. But her parents never accepted her sexuality, and she was always nervous about backlash, which, in part, led to her marriage with her abusive ex, who constantly threatened to out her. As a brand new Florida Republican, Sweeney has not spoken out against or denounced the party or state that passed one of the country\u2019s most notorious \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bills\u2014which feels like very cretin-esque behavior to me.<\/p>\n

For her part, Martin has celebrated the film: \u201cShe wasn\u2019t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy in this movie,\u201d she told the audience at the film\u2019s TIFF premiere<\/a> in September. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019s awesome. She kicks ass!\u201d OK, let\u2019s not get crazy now\u2026<\/p>\n

On Monday, Sweeney attempted to shrug off the embarrassing box office numbers, writing<\/a> on Instagram that \u201cwe don\u2019t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.\u201d Sure, but if nobody went to see your film because of your flailing public image,\u00a0then you\u2019re not really doing it for impact either.<\/p>\n

Yet, imagine the ~impact~ she might have had if, instead of using this press tour\u2014in which she\u2019s promoting a film where she plays a gay female athlete\u2014to blankly stare<\/a> into the abyss when asked to denounce white supremacy, she used it to denounce the Trump administration\u2019s ceaseless attack on the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, a Florida Republican could never.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
