College football coach John Beam<\/strong>, who was featured on Netflix\u2019s Last Chance U<\/em><\/a>, is in critical condition after being shot on campus at Laney College in Oakland, California, on Thursday, November 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt approximately noon, a senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them \u2014 and their loved ones \u2014 in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time,\u201d the Peralta Community College District said<\/a> in a statement on Thursday, choosing not to name Beam.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaney College was under active lockdown as law enforcement authorities secured the campus and investigated the situation.Oakland Police Department has confirmed there\u2019s no longer an active threat and the campus lockdown has been lifted; however, the campus is closed for the rest of the day,\u201d the statement continued, describing the incident as a \u201cfrightening moment for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a Thursday news conference, Oakland Police Department acting chief James Beere<\/strong>, told reporters, \u201cWe\u2019re currently asking the public\u2019s help in locating a suspect, a potential suspect in this case,\u201d per NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that there was some concern that this may have been an active shooter. We responded as if it was an active shooter. I can tell you right now it was not an active shooter,\u201d Beere said.<\/p>\n

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee<\/strong> said in a statement to NBC Bay Area<\/a>, \u201cMy thoughts are with Coach John Beam and his loved ones. We are praying for him. Coach Beam is a giant in Oakland \u2014 a mentor, an educator, and a lifeline for thousands of young people. For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beam was Laney College\u2019s head football coach from 2012 to 2024 and has been the school\u2019s athletic director since 2006.<\/p>\n

Beam and his students were featured on the fifth and final season of Netflix\u2019s Last Chance U<\/em>, which aired in 2020 and documented the lives of collegiate athletes.<\/p>\n

Beam was noted for his interpersonal skills with his players, including hugging them and encouraging vulnerability.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo many young men, especially young men of color, showing your vulnerability is a sign of weakness,\u201d he said in a 2020 New York Times<\/em><\/a> interview. \u201cAnd we\u2019re trying to say: \u2018No. It\u2019s not. In fact, it\u2019s a sign of strength. Asking for help is a strength move, a power move.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
