A new study has found that 97 per cent of people \u201ccan\u2019t tell the difference\u201d between real and AI<\/a> music. Find all the details below.<\/p>\n A \u201cfirst-of-its-kind\u201d survey<\/a>, conducted by French streaming service Deezer and research firm Ipsos, asked around 9,000 people from eight different countries around the world, to listen to three tracks to determine which was fully AI-generated.<\/p>\n According to the report, 97 per cent of those respondents \u201cfailed\u201d, with over half (52 per cent) saying they felt \u201cuncomfortable\u201d to not know the difference. 71 per cent also said that they were shocked at the results.<\/p>\n The study also found that 55 per cent of respondents were \u201ccurious\u201d about AI-generated music, and 66 per cent said they would listen to it at least once, out of curiosity.<\/p>\n However, only 19 per cent said they felt that they could trust AI, while another 51 per cent said they believe the use of AI in music production could lead to low-quality and \u201cgeneric\u201d sounding music.<\/p>\n \u201cThe survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know if they\u2019re listening to AI or human made tracks or not,\u201d says Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s also no doubt that there are concerns about how AI-generated music will affect the livelihood of artists, music creation and that AI companies shouldn\u2019t be allowed to train their models on copyrighted material.\u201d<\/p>\n Deezer have previously revealed that 28 per cent of music uploaded to the streaming platform<\/a>\u00a0was fully AI-generated.<\/p>\n The new stats come during a period of continued controversy for AI technology in the music industry, with a recent study sharing the stark warning that\u00a0people working in music are likely to lose a quarter of their income to Artificial Intelligence over the next four years.<\/a><\/p>\n In September, Spotify confirmed that it was cracking down on AI by removing 75million \u201cspammy tracks\u201d and targeting impersonators<\/a>. The statement, titled \u2018Spotify Strengthens AI Protections For Artists, Songwriters, And Producers\u2019, added: \u201cAI technology is evolving fast, and we\u2019ll continue to roll out new policies frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n This followed a report claiming that\u00a0AI-generated songs were being uploaded to dead musicians\u2019 Spotify profiles without permission<\/a>.<\/p>\n Earlier this year, an AI-generated \u2018band\u2019 called The Velvet Sundown made headlines after gaining around 400,000 monthly Spotify listeners<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 despite only existing for less than a month.\u00a0A \u2018spokesperson\u2019 for the viral act later admitted that he was running a hoax aimed at \u201cthe media\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
