LOS ANGELES \u2014 Even after 30 years since her passing, Selena Quintanilla is still making the world go “bidi bidi bom bom” \u2014 a true testament that the legacy of the Queen of Tejano’s music has withstood the test of time.<\/p>\n
Netflix\u2019s new documentary, \u201cSelena y Los Dinos: A Family\u2019s Legacy,\u201d celebrates not only her life and legacy but that of her family, with whom she performed, triumphed and redefined music genres.<\/p>\n
Yes, the world knows Selena\u2019s unforgettable story, but for the first time in 30 years, the Quintanilla family opened up their personal archives to share her story in a way that hasn\u2019t been told before.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis film was an unbelievable act of generosity and vulnerability,\u201d film director Isabel Castro told Spectrum News. \u201cThe family recognized that they were finally ready to sit down and talk about their experience as a band and their memories of Selena.\u201d<\/p>\n

Castro described making the film \u2014 while protecting Selena\u2019s story \u2014 as a beautiful experience because both she and the\u00a0Quintanilla family realized they wanted to create the same film.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially there was some adjusting while we were building trust,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a conversation about what they wanted from the film and what we wanted to find out and kind of find that [commonality] within the archive that they gave us.\u201d<\/p>\n
In making \u201cSelena y Los Dinos,\u201d Castro said she was reminded of not only how young Selena was, but \u201clooking at the footage day after day I really understood how authentic she is.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOne thing that I learned was that she was really funny and really witty. I didn\u2019t know before making this film, the sense of humor she had,\u201d said Castro.<\/p>\n
Castro was just 8 years old when she discovered Selena \u2014 who became a huge influence and symbolic figure throughout her life.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo me, she represents the pride and power of being Latino and also of being [a] bicultural Latino …\u00a0ni<\/i>\u00a0de aqu\u00ed, ni de all\u00e1<\/i>,\u201d she said. \u201cShe grew up in a place that was very influenced by Mexican culture, but she didn\u2019t grow up speaking Spanish. There is something about that that really resonated with me and has stayed with me throughout my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Selena became the No. 1 selling female artist in Latin music history and is acclaimed for hits such as \u201cComo La Flor,\u201d \u201cBidi Bidi Bom Bom,\u201d \u201cI Could Fall In Love\u201d and \u201cDreaming Of You.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 1994, Selena won a Grammy for Best Mexican\/Mexican-American Album for \u201cSelena Live!\u201d In doing so, she became the first female Tejano artist to win a Grammy.<\/p>\n
In 2021, Selena was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Grammy.<\/p>\n

Next January, the \u201cSelena: From Texas to the World\u201d exhibition will open at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The exhibition will mark the first time some of Selena\u2019s personal artifacts will be on display outside of the Selena Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas.<\/p>\n
\u201cSelena y Los Dinos: A Family\u2019s Legacy\u201d will stream on Netflix on Nov. 17.<\/p>\n
