That\u2019s saying a lot for this 1980s-set show that pits nerdy kids in Hawkins, Indiana, against monsters from a parallel world known as the Upside Down in fiery, gory fights that include a lab massacre and a mall inferno. Season 5\u2019s life-or-death conclusion rolls out in three volumes, on November 26, December 25, and December 31.<\/p>\n
And battle fatigue isn\u2019t an option for the small-town crew who, in Season 1, confidently pinged a baddy with slingshots. That was early in the insanity, when the kids were still playing Dungeons & Dragons in leader Mike Wheeler\u2019s (Finn Wolfhard<\/a>) basement, until one of them, shy Will Byers (Noah Schnapp<\/a>), mysteriously disappeared. The audience knew he\u2019d been taken by a monster, a fate that the kids eventually figured out. In the search for Will, his friends encountered a mysterious girl (Millie Bobby Brown<\/a>) first known only by the number, 011, tattooed on her arm.<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mike was smitten with the scrappy waif, who turned out to be a telekinetic escapee from an abusive U.S. government program at Hawkins National Laboratory that trained \u201cgifted\u201d children for use in war and espionage. During an experiment, she accidentally opened a gate into the Upside Down, unleashing monsters like the one that stole Will. From that meeting on, it was a wild banana-seat-bike ride for Mike and his pals, sarcastic Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo<\/a>); hotheaded Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin<\/a>), and Will, who was eventually rescued. Eleven joined their group and used her ability to move things 10 times her size to beat back the creatures \u2014 and some school bullies.<\/p>\n The beast-fighting battalion grew to include parents, siblings, and more friends. With Eleven\u2019s powers, they closed the rift, but every season it was torn open by various antagonists, allowing Demogorgons, Demodogs, and the hive-minded Mind Flayer to use it as a doggy door to invade their world or drag them into the dark one. The fourth season ended with a massive crack in the earth that split Hawkins in two, and seemed impossible to seal.<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n When the show returns, it\u2019s 1987, a little over a year later. Hawkins is under quarantine and being patrolled by the military. The gang\u2019s mission: Save humankind by killing the Upside Down\u2019s ruler, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower<\/a>). (Quick resum\u00e9: born Henry Creel in 1947; became One at the same lab as Eleven; tried to kill her; she kicked him into the Upside Down; he transformed into Vecna. Main objective: hurt and destroy.)<\/p>\n The Hawkins squad came close to slaughtering the slimy sadist in the fourth season.<\/p>\n \u201cHe got blasted into pieces and fell three stories,\u201d says Ross. \u201cThey\u2019ve been searching since the last season ended, but have no leads. They don\u2019t know exactly where Vecna is or what he is planning.\u201d When he does appear, he won\u2019t look the same. After the fall, adds Ross, \u201che had to rebuild his body. Though he appears stronger in some ways, there are also holes and gaps in his body. He is more monstrous and less human. He\u2019s quite a bit scarier.\u201d<\/p>\n Eleven also has the government on her tail.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re hunting her for the same reason they\u2019ve always been hunting her,\u201d says Ross. \u201cShe\u2019s a weapon, or at least that\u2019s how they view her. When we find her, she\u2019s been in training. She has the same powers, but she\u2019s honing them and learning how to use them in new and exciting ways.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n She\u2019s being hidden by her adoptive father, Chief of Police Jim Hopper (David Harbour<\/a>), who wants to protect her but also prepare her for the fight of her life.<\/p>\n \u201cHopper\u2019s training for these Upside Down crawls, prepping for a final battle with Vecna,\u201d Harbour teases. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t tell the people he loves, but he\u2019s gearing up for something big.\u201d And lying to the people he cares about to keep his mission hidden takes its toll: \u201cThere are the exterior threats like Vecna, but the real challenge is living with this heroism that\u2019s full of deep love but also betrayal. He sees it as his only answer, but it strains his relationships when people find out.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Leading the Feds\u2019 hunt for Eleven is a scowling new face, Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton<\/a>. The Terminator<\/em><\/a> action star is just one of many \u201980s icons the Duffers have cast over the years.<\/p>\n \u201cI loved the whole world this show invented. It reminded me of E.T.<\/em><\/a> and sweet relationship movies from that era,\u201d Hamilton says.<\/p>\n Dr. Kay is the military\u2019s lead scientist, and \u201cher sole focus is finding Eleven,\u201d the actress previews. \u201cEverything else, the loss of life and the cataclysmic stuff happening around her, does not shake her from her mission. Science is what matters, and she\u2019s very much trying to stop the drama that\u2019s unfolding and thinks she\u2019s doing the right thing for Hawkins. Nothing gets in her way.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n While Eleven and her action-hero dad are on their journey, the rest of the gang rallies around the show\u2019s other fiercely protective main parent, Will\u2019s mom Joyce (Winona Ryder<\/a>), who is involved with Hopper. Says Ryder, \u201cThey\u2019re a great team because they can call each other out and support each other.\u201d And you can bet their investigator buddy Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman<\/a>) won\u2019t miss any of the fun either.<\/p>\n This bigger group\u2019s HQ is on a new set, the Squawk radio station. Another fresh location is the massive \u201cdestroyed\u201d Hawkins, built on a lot. Returning spots are the junkyard and the oldie but goodie (or gooey) Upside Down tunnels.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of the focus is tying back in to Seasons 1 and 2,\u201d Matt says. \u201cYou see how all the puzzle pieces fit together. Lots of callbacks. We flash back to previous seasons and moments, and you see how everything is connected.\u201d<\/p>\n Adds his brother, \u201cAs our characters learn new information \u2014 say, about the Upside Down and Vecna \u2014 things in the past take on new meaning. Mysteries of the past are solved.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n And of course, keep an eye on sensitive, artistic Will, the eye of this story\u2019s storm since the series premiere.<\/p>\n \u201cWill has some sort of connection to the evil that\u2019s going on in the Upside Down. We get into that and explore what that means, and what it means for Will moving forward,\u201d says Matt.<\/p>\n Will has always been able to sense the Mind Flayer, but last season, he was far away in California.<\/p>\n \u201cNow we\u2019re seeing the effects of Will being back in [Hawkins],\u201d says Schnapp. \u201cWe hit the ground running, which is not how we\u2019ve started any other season. Everyone is in one place; we have the same objective. He\u2019s more than just the kid who got kidnapped \u2014 you see what\u2019s beyond that. I\u2019m excited to see him exploring his identity and understanding his connection to the Upside Down.\u201d<\/p>\n He\u2019ll form a bond with the gang\u2019s polyglot Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke<\/a>), who mentors him. Says Hawke: \u201cHis character becomes himself this year, in more ways than one. That makes Robin feel less alone and useful.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Also finding more purpose is Mike, who is \u201cback in leadership mode, and he\u2019s taken it upon himself to help plan missions,\u201d Wolfhard notes. \u201cMike started as the Dungeon Master \u2014 always planning for disaster, fun, adventure to protect his friends. As the seasons have gone on, Mike has deviated from that, and now he\u2019s back. No one else is going to be the optimist when there\u2019s such dark things happening.\u201d<\/p>\n Mike and Eleven still manage to see each other, too.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s one scene where he\u2019s talking to Eleven,\u201d Wolfhard previews, \u201cand he tells her that we\u2019re all going to be OK, and that we\u2019re going to move on from Hawkins, and it\u2019s this nice fantasy way of Mike thinking. That was fun to do because it felt like Season 1.\u201d<\/p>\n The actor also hints about a \u201cpivotal, emotional scene\u201d at a hospital where he and big sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer<\/a>) are waiting for their mom, Karen (Cara Buono<\/a>). \u201cBoth of us are feeling the guilt of not telling our parents what\u2019s been going on with the Upside Down.\u201d<\/p>\n Dyer teases that Nancy \u201chas a bit of a journey. At first, she\u2019s leading this charge. That\u2019s very Nancy. But things shift, and she has some real things to come to terms with \u2014 some decision. We\u2019re still wearing pastel pink, though, so some things never change.\u201d<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Nancy has been struggling in her murky relationship with Will\u2019s older brother, moody photographer Jonathan (Charlie Heaton<\/a>).<\/p>\n \u201cHe lied to her. All is not well,\u201d Matt says. Waiting in the wings is loyal Steve Harrington (Joe Keery<\/a>). \u201cSteve has big hero moments,\u201d Matt adds. \u201cAnd there\u2019s this unrequited love for Nancy.\u201d<\/p>\n Throwing the group dynamic off balance is Dustin\u2019s grief over the death of metalhead Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn<\/a>).<\/p>\n \u201cDustin is so wrapped up in the common goal to find and kill Vecna that he\u2019s not really dealing with the loss,\u201d Matarazzo says. \u201cHe tries to keep Eddie\u2019s spirit alive through changes in himself, like the music he\u2019s listening to and his clothes. It\u2019s hard for him to be the same person. That\u2019s affected the way he is with his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n At least Steve is there to support his pal. \u201cA lot of Steve\u2019s struggle this season is feeling like [Dustin] is closed off and acting rashly,\u201d Keery notes.<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The worst off is Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink<\/a>), who moved to Hawkins in Season 2. In the fourth-season finale, Vecna killed her during their quest to destroy him. She was revived (barely) and is now in a coma. Lucas visits daily, playing her favorite song, \u201cRunning Up That Hill,\u201d by Kate Bush<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cHe holds that burden of wishing he could have saved Max,\u201d says McLaughlin. \u201cHe feels like it\u2019s his fault that she\u2019s where she\u2019s at.\u201d Adds Sink: \u201cThere\u2019s still a small glimmer of hope, though, and her friends are hanging on to that.\u201d<\/p>\n The Hawkins crew has some extra support with new monster-mashing recruits, following in the footsteps of Lucas\u2019 smart little sis Erica (Priah Ferguson<\/a>). The Wheelers\u2019 youngest, Holly (new actress Nell Fisher), has a significant role, as does a boy who bullies her, Derek Turnbow (Jake Connolly).<\/p>\n With all that\u2019s going on, it\u2019s hard to fathom everyone surviving. When it comes to main character deaths<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s always potential, but it\u2019s not like there\u2019s a Red Wedding,\u201d says Ross, referring to Game of Thrones<\/a><\/em>\u2018 famed bloodbath.<\/p>\n Besides, saying goodbye is hard enough.<\/p>\n Netflix<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe last two weeks in general were very emotional,\u201d says Matt, who notes that not everyone is in the final scene. \u201cWe tried to work it out so that everyone\u2019s last scene in the show was the last scene [of them] that we filmed. Every time we wrapped one of our leads, it was intense.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d be like, \u2018I\u2019m fine. I\u2019m not going to cry.\u2019 Then someone starts crying, and then you\u2019re crying. We were a mess,\u201d adds Ross.<\/p>\n As for how the characters end up, Heaton says, \u201cThere\u2019s a satisfying nature to it. You get closure. It was emotional seeing [the younger cast] playing out their childhoods.
