Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist and principal songwriter for The Who, has been creating music for more than six decades, leading to dozens of memorable hits.<\/p>\n

So is it possible for him to list what he believes are his five best songs?<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert put him to the test Wednesday during an appearance<\/a> on \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d asking Townshend, 80, what he thought were the best songs he had ever written.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the top is \u2018Love, Reign O\u2019er Me,\u2019\u201d Townshend said, citing the song that closes the 1973 album \u201cQuadrophenia.\u201d The album about mods and rockers in England during the 1960s has been turned into a ballet and Townshend was on Colbert\u2019s show to promote upcoming performances in New York.<\/p>\n

He goes on to name \u201cBehind Blue Eyes\u201d and \u201cBaba O\u2019Riley,\u201d two classics from the 1971 album \u201cWho\u2019s Next,\u201d and also \u201cLet My Love Open the Door,\u201d a hit from Townshend\u2019s 1980 solo album \u201cEmpty Glass.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also names \u201cWon\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u201d the closing track on \u201cWho\u2019s Next,\u201d saying he believes it\u2019s \u201cmost applicable to the modern world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur leaders are never any good,\u201d Townshend says. \u201cAnd when people try to tell us who to vote for, we always don\u2019t feel quite right about that, so I wrote this song called \u2018Won\u2019t Get Fooled Again.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a kind of a comment on the fact that the people we put in power always seem to end up breaking their promises,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s not directed at anybody now, today, but just everybody who\u2019s ever been.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoliticians promise stuff that they sort of know, they have their fingers crossed behind them, they know that they can\u2019t deliver some of the stuff that they promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Who recently completed its final tour of North America, ending Oct. 1 in Palm Springs, Calif.<\/p>\n
