The 55-year-old Irish lenser has built a career defined by radical range: Staring from the raw, handheld urgency of Andrea Arnold<\/a> \u2014 his first major collaborator \u2014 to the fixed-tripod, long-lens approach of kitchen sink master Ken Loach<\/a>, to the wild, rule-breaking experimentation of Yorgos Lanthimos<\/a> and the actor-centered, classically composed approach of Noah Baumbach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The throughline isn\u2019t a signature look but a signature philosophy: That the story dictates the style. Ryan has shot on a 4:3 ratio [for Arnold<\/a>\u2019s Fish Tank] and on VistaVision [Lanthimos\u2019 Bugonia].
