HGTV viewers were not happy when they tuned in last week to find the holiday movie Elf<\/a> airing instead of one of the network\u2019s many renovation and design shows.<\/a><\/p>\n The Will Ferrell<\/a> and Zooey Deschanel<\/a>-starring Christmas film aired twice last week on HGTV, once on Thursday (November 13) at 8 pm and then again on Friday (November 14) at 12 am. While the movie is a holiday favorite, HGTV viewers didn\u2019t appreciate it taking up time in the network\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy is Elf on HGTV?!?\u201d wrote one frustrated Reddit user<\/a>. \u201cThis is the second week in a row that some lame azz old movie is on HGTV. Where are the design shows?!? If this is the new direction of HGTV, I\u2019m out!\u201d<\/p>\n Another agreed, writing, \u201cI love Elf, but I\u2019d be highly pissed if I noticed it was on HGTV. But this is why I don\u2019t mess with cable anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t tune into HGTV to watch Elf,\u201d said another. \u201cSounds like HGTV management needs to bring back some of the cancelled programs that actually highlighted home building, remodeling, landscaping and interior design.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey have more than enough content from over the years. These movies should not be on HGTV. What\u2019s going on with this channel?\u201d added another.<\/p>\n Another added, \u201cHGTV is taking the path MTV took in the 90\u2019s when they began moving away from playing actual music videos.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like it\u2019s a glitch or something. Makes zero sense,\u201d said one fan. \u201cThe movie last week, & Elf this week, traditionally will play almost non-stop on other channels for the next 6 weeks or so. NO reason I can think of for xmas movies on HGTV.\u201d<\/p>\n Others suggested it is money-related, with one user noting, \u201cWarner Bros. Discovery owns HGTV.\u00a0Elf\u00a0is a New Line Cinema film. New Line is a Warner Bros. Discovery outfit. It\u2019s all about the Benjamins.\u201d<\/p>\n Another went a step further, saying, \u201cYou can link that back to Property Brothers since Zooey Deschanel was in the movie. I\u2019m sure she gets royalties from it so\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Deschanel met Property Brothers<\/a> star Jonathan Scott<\/a> while filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series<\/a> in August 2019. The pair hit it off and began dating. They announced their engagement on August 13, 2023.<\/p>\n HGTV has been airing more old movies this year,<\/a> drawing the ire of viewers. Earlier this year, fans complained about the network airing the 2015 Anne Hathaway<\/a> and Robert De Niro<\/a> movie, The Intern<\/a>, and the 1991 Steve Martin<\/a> classic Father of the Bride<\/a>.<\/p>\n This comes amid several popular HGTV shows being canceled over the summer<\/a>, including Bargain Block<\/a>,\u00a0Married to Real Estate<\/a>,\u00a0Izzy Does It<\/a>,\u00a0Farmhouse Fixer<\/a>,\u00a0Battle on the Beach<\/a>,\u00a0Christina on the Coast<\/a>, and\u00a0The Flipping El Moussas<\/a>.<\/p>\n While many were frustrated by HGTV\u2019s move into movies, others used the opportunity to poke fun.<\/p>\n \u201cSeeing the movie Elf on HGTV is probably the most color anyone\u2019s seen on that channel in decades,\u201d quipped one Reddit commenter.<\/p>\n \u201cHe did some pretty awesome decorating in the department store and at home! He also repurposed a book shelf into a rocking horse,\u201d joked another.<\/p>\n \u201cElf is a wonderful decorator!
