[I] wasn\u2019t a video game kid. I was born in [1972] so, really, I\u2019m an Atari 2600 guy. [But] obviously, I knew who Sonic was. I knew that he was this fast little guy, and I always thought that he was this really interesting character. He\u2019s got a bit of a punk attitude.<\/strong><br \/>He\u2019s a little bit snarky and a little bit funny, and a little bit self-deprecating \u2014 but still smart and loving, which I think is very Bowling for Soup. It\u2019s like, sure, okay, we\u2019re the funny band, but there\u2019s some substance there. Sonic has a little substance in his heart as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>How did you end up working with Punk Rock Factory and Wheatus for the new cover?<\/strong><br \/>When I went to Punk Rock Factory, who I thought were the perfect band to do this with, because they\u2019ve covered so many things in movies and television, but also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/video-games\/\" id=\"auto-tag_video-games\" data-tag=\"video-games\">video games<\/a> and cartoons \u2014 I was like, \u201cDude, I\u2019ve got the perfect song for us to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t[This] song has a really serious cult following. There are a lot of people who know Bowling for Soup because of this song, because of this video game. It hasn\u2019t been available to them on a widespread scale other than just the random YouTube videos and stuff. The guys just nailed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt sounds like a pop punk song. It\u2019s fast, like Sonic. The music really does lend itself to his pace. When I heard the track, I was like, \u201cWe\u2019re definitely onto something.\u201d Then, well, we\u2019ve got this show coming up at Wembley and Brendan [Brown] from Wheatus can actually shred on the guitar. So, I\u2019m like, \u201cLet\u2019s all three of us be on this song together, and it\u2019ll be thing that we can get out before the play the biggest show of Bowling for Soup\u2019s career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Why is now the right time to bring this song back, 17 years later?<\/strong><br \/>First of all, Sonic being around and the movies doing so well is one thing, but also just the nostalgia of our music [and] our genre \u2014 what\u2019s going on with so many of us having celebrated 20 years of really big records and everybody\u2019s back out there on the road. It\u2019s just a really good time, both in the nostalgia of both the character [and] our band. If I get on a TikTok Live or something, you expect people to go, \u201cOh, \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VGRxmYXi4Io\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VGRxmYXi4Io\">Girl All the Bad Guys Want<\/a>\u2019 is the first pop punk song I heard,\u201d or, \u201c\u2019<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K38xNqZvBJI\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K38xNqZvBJI\">1985<\/a>\u2019 is the first single I ever bought.\u201d Those are all things [where] I\u2019m very lucky, but I can sort of expect to hear. It\u2019s like pop punk kids sitting at <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming\/how-tony-hawks-pro-skater-soundtrack-25-anniversary-1235124243\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/rs-gaming\/how-tony-hawks-pro-skater-soundtrack-25-anniversary-1235124243\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tony Hawk\u2019s Pro Skater<\/a><\/em> and listening to Pennywise and Goldfinger. It\u2019s the same thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong><em>Tony Hawk<\/em> is a good comparison, but it\u2019s almost even further here because \u201cEndless Possibilities\u201d wasn\u2019t just one of your singles used for a game\u2019s soundtrack.<\/strong><br \/>A hundred percent. This song was specifically written for that character. I was in his head when I was writing. He is who I represent in the lyrics; we\u2019ve all got to start from somewhere. For me, possibilities are never ending, and I feel like that\u2019s how Sonic is, man. He believes he can do anything. When he gets down on himself, he figures it out.
