Today, it\u2019s not the will\u2013they\u2013won\u2019t\u2013they of Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelly Long) that\u2019s finding an audience, but the dry wit of Cliff (John Ratzenberger), the mailman with an encyclopedic knowledge of every topic, and Norm (George Wendt), the sometimes-employed barfly. The two play perfectly off every other character, from rookie bartender Woody (Woody Harrelson) to the uptight psychiatrist Frasier Crane (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/kelsey-grammer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kelsey Grammer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Kelsey Grammer<\/a>), and even the guest stars who popped into the bar as the show skyrocketed in popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Case in point, <em>Night Courts\u2019<\/em> Harry Anderson\u2019s recurring appearances as Harry \u201cThe Hat,\u201d a charming swindler who makes a bet with Cliff that he can drink a shot without moving the hat covering it. Cliff takes him up on the bet, and promptly loses when Harry pretends to drink it from under the bar, so Cliff removes the hat himself, and Harry downs the shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When Cliff tries the same trick, Harry downs the shot while Cliff is under the bar. Every episode maintains the same pacing and rhythms, with a few exceptions, such as when Cliff goes on <em>Jeopardy!<\/em> or when the gang goes bowling, and oddly, Norm is also greeted at the bowling alley bar. In a world without sitcoms, everything <em>Cheers<\/em> does right stands out, even to those who didn\u2019t grow up with the instantly recognizable theme song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If there\u2019s a downside to <em>Cheers<\/em>, it\u2019s that the topical humor is rooted in \u201980s politics and pop culture.
