Netflix\u2019s new Eddie Murphy documentary, Being Eddie<\/em>, chronicles the prolific comedian\u2019s ascent to stardom \u2014\u00a0as well as some low points in his career, including the fallout from a hurtful joke that kept him away from Saturday Night Live <\/em>for years.<\/p>\n Murphy skyrocketed to fame after joining the cast of SNL <\/em>in 1980 at 19 years old, before moving on to a successful career in film with movies like Trading Places<\/em> and Beverly Hills Cop<\/em>. However, he failed to secure a hit with the 1995 film Vampire in Brooklyn<\/em>.<\/p>\n David Spade, an SNL<\/em> cast member at the time, mocked the movie’s lack of success with a joke aimed at Murphy. \u201cLook children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Murphy likened the comment to \u201cyour alma mater taking a shot at you.\u201d He said it was particularly hurtful because it insulted his career. \u201cIf there was a joke like that right now, and it was about some other SNL <\/em>cast member, and it was about how f****d up their career was, it would be shot down. The producers would look at it [and say] \u2018You\u2019re not saying that joke.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Murphy said he didn\u2019t blame Spade, specifically, for making the joke, as he knew that it had to go through multiple channels at SNL <\/em>to get on-air. Instead, he remembered thinking, \u201c\u2018F*** SNL<\/em>, f*** y\u2019all. How y\u2019all gonna do this s***? That\u2019s what y\u2019all think of me? … And that\u2019s why I didn\u2019t go back for years.\u201d<\/p>\n
