Saturday Night Live\u00a0often works best when the host is willing to leave his ego at the door to Studio 8H, and\u00a0Glen Powell<\/a>\u00a0is that kind of guy. The Running Man star\u2019s commitment to his both his sketch roles and the absurd wigs he wore for them helped make the Nov. 15 episode \u2014 which featured the neo-soul singer-songwriter\u00a0Olivia Dean<\/a>\u00a0as the musical guest \u2014 the best of the season so far.<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n Powell\u2019s million-dollar smile and the moments he was clearly struggling to not break scene left no doubt that he was having a ball. And the writers must have loved him, because he was in every sketch \u2014 save for the cold open and\u00a0Weekend Update.<\/p>\n Not surprisingly the Epstein files were a big topic this time out: they were referenced in Weekend Update and five-count-\u2018em-five of the sketches \u2014 although three of those were\u00a0MacGruber\u00a0vignettes, which brought back former\u00a0SNL\u00a0cast member Will Forte<\/a> as the duct-tape-and-chewing-gum bomb defuser who never fails to blow himself up real good.<\/p>\n As for the cast, there was a lot of ensemble work in this episode, and everyone appeared in at least two skits. Jane Wickline<\/a>\u2018s roles were minimal \u2014 which may have had to do with her comedy sketch duo with Liva Pierce, Dukes, appearing at the New York Comedy Festival <\/a>the following night. Only Marcello Hernandez stole the show from Powell. More about that later.<\/p>\n In the run-up to Thanksgiving,\u00a0SNL\u00a0takes the next two weekends off and returns on Dec. 6 with Melissa McCarthy hosting \u2014 expect plenty of physical comedy \u2014 and\u00a0Dijon<\/a>\u00a0as the musical guest. In the meantime, here are the top five skits of the Nov. 16 show in ascending order from funny to funniest.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n Billboard VIP Pass<\/p>\n Three of these\u00a0pre-taped bits<\/a>\u00a0appeared over the course of the show, with Powell sporting the original\u00a0MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson\u2019s feathered blond \u2018do, but playing Colton, a sidekick to Forte\u2019s mullet-wearing title character. Chloe Fineman<\/a> is sidekick No. 2, Tawnee.<\/p>\n They are locked in various control rooms because, Colton surmises, he is carrying a top-secret document he is planning to leak to the press. \u201cThe Colonel\u2019s secret recipe?\u201d MacGruber asks. No, Colton replies, it\u2019s the\u2026Epstein files! He hands off the document to MacGruber, who says, \u201cNo one, and I mean no one is above the law.\u201d Until he spies a name in the file that he recognizes \u2014 his own. Obfuscation and explosions follow.<\/p>\n The first two episodes \u2014 Colton happens to have a second copy under his vest \u2014 are truly funny. The third, not so much.<\/p>\n At the top of this\u00a0sketch<\/a>, the C-SPAN voiceover says White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt \u2014 played by Ashley Padilla <\/a>\u2014 \u201cis about to have a day.\u201d The reporters gathered at the daily press briefing have plenty of questions about the House Oversight Committee\u2019s Epstein document dump earlier in the week, and she is defending President Trump with her trademark brand of insults \u2014 \u201cYou know you suck, right?\u201d she says to Fineman\u2019s Kaitlan Collins \u2014 and unconditional positive regard for her boss. \u201cIf anything, his crime was loving too much,\u201d she replies to one reporter, \u201cand possibly too young.\u201d<\/p>\n Leavitt demands to change the subject until another reporter asks, \u201cIs it true the administration secretly sent $840 million to Argentina to pay off its debts?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe shall return to Epstein,\u201d replies the flustered press secretary.<\/p>\n She\u2019s given a reprieve when Trump (James Austin Johnson<\/a>) takes over at the podium. As part of his attempts at a defense, the President breaks out the many worlds theory of quantum mechanics. \u201cI said I kicked Jeffrey out because he was a pedophile. But then I said I didn\u2019t know he didn\u2019t do anything wrong. It\u2019s kind of hard to square that circle until you realize that Trump exists across many timelines. It\u2019s the Trump multiverse theory. We just happen to be living in the worst one.\u201d<\/p>\n Country music tropes make the genre easy to parody, and \u201cI Miss My Ex\u2019s Dad\u201d has all the hats, booze and denim you might expect, but this song and the pre-recorded\u00a0music video<\/a> that highlights it, are still a cut above<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tommy Brennan<\/a> and Ben Marshall<\/a> are two good ol\u2019 boys who miss the fathers of their ex-girlfriends more than their women, and they sell the song with deep, rich whiskey voices that could conceivably make this song a contender on the Billboard country charts<\/a>. And the lyrics and video cast, most notably Sarah Sherman and Powell, bring the laughs. \u201cYour socks, your Crocs \u2014 you\u2019re the ideal male with your ponytail,\u201d Brennan sings, a prelude to Powell dramatically swinging his dork knob over his shoulder.<\/p>\n Marshall remembers his ex\u2019s pops \u2014 Kenan Thompson<\/a> \u2014 for his footwear advice. \u201cYou recommended Brooks running shoes \/ Now my arches are forever indebted to you.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s a Steely Dan<\/a> reference as well, which helps make this bit worth its weight in Yeti coolers and Dodge Ram pickups.<\/p>\n As more comedians play arenas, they\u2019re faced with the predicament of filling massive stages for massive audiences on their own. Sebastian Maniscalco<\/a>, who played five nights at Madison Square Garden in fall 2024, has confronted that issue by exaggerating his expressions and physicality to near cartoonish levels.<\/p>\n Hernandez\u2019s\u00a0impression<\/a>\u00a0of Maniscalco\u00a0hilariously\u00a0nails the comedian\u2019s greatest hits of histrionics \u2014 his cock walk, wildly swinging hands and hips, referee signals and the old Superman back kick \u2014 in a skit about him joining a bachelor\u2019s weekend. He\u2019s dressed in sharkskin and a black turtleneck. The rest of the guys are wearing Hawaiian shirts and shorts.<\/p>\n Hernandez<\/a> nails Maniscalco\u2019s voice and comic style, too. When one of the men suggests playing a game, Hernandez interrupts. \u201cYou know what\u2019s a game I don\u2019t like. Twister,\u201d he says, recalling a time when, with his right foot on yellow, \u201cThis son of a bitch, he goes right hand to purple. Now, my hand is in my rectum. And I go, \u2018It\u2019s not supposed to be there!\u2019\u201d His performance is almost certainly an homage to Maniscalco, who told\u00a0Men\u2019s Journal\u00a0earlier this fall that Hernandez is \u201creally talented \u2014 got a future.\u201d<\/p>\n Yes! And, if his performance wasn\u2019t enough, an equally spot-on cameo by Fineman as Jennifer Coolidge<\/a> seals the deal.<\/p>\n This\u00a0sketch<\/a>\u00a0tops the ranking based not just on humor but\u00a0fierce\u00a0originality, diva. Andrew Dismukes, an Army private waiting for deployment \u2014 his name patch is a nod to\u00a0SNLco-head writer Kent Sublette \u2014 is visited by the Slay Division, led by Bowen Yang <\/a>and featuring Powell \u2014 his name patch, \u201cMcFadden,\u201d presumably as in new writer, Claire McFadden \u2014 and Sarah Sherman<\/a>. Yang declares Private Sublette a good fit for the squad: \u201cBooty, caked; waist, snatched; face, giving. But the hair\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n In the Slay Division, \u201ceverybody gets bobbed,\u201d says Sherman, which is apparent from the moment the trio arrives. \u201cResearch shows there\u2019s nothing more intimidating than a freak-ass bob,\u201d Yang explains, adding, \u201cA buzz cut says, \u2018Get the guns.\u2019 But a bob says, \u2018Get the manager.\u2019\u201d The division\u2019s secret weapon: synchronized head bobbling set to a Hanna-Barbera skedaddle sound effect. They also listen to Tate McRae<\/a> and, Sherman says, \u201cdo poppers until we pass out.\u201d<\/p>\n Before Dismukes can join up, the Slay Division is interrupted by the Bang Battalion, led by Padilla, whose bob-sniffing dog \u2014 a Doberman with bangs \u2014 has tracked their rivals.
