The Lafayette City Zoning Commission recommended that the City Council deny the request to rezone a property that could be home to a Roman-style entertainment facility called the Colosseum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 50,000-square-foot building in the 800 block of Verot School Road would offer live performances, several bars, and a pool hall, according to documents filed with the Lafayette Consolidated Government.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the idea didn’t strike a chord with commission members, who had already signaled they were leaning toward denying the request.<\/p>\n

Staff argued that the building would be an “intrusive use” on nearby neighbors, but said the owner could construct a normal pool hall or event center, which is permitted under the property’s current CM-1 commercial mixed zoning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

“The scale of this development and its maximum capacity is a reason why we feel this use will not be compatible with the surrounding land uses, especially residential uses,” staff wrote.<\/p>\n

The office had received 11 calls, mostly from residents of the nearby Harbor Lights neighborhood, opposing the entertainment facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yury Remedio, the property owner, requested rezoning of the property from its current commercial mixed zoning\u00a0to commercial heavy.\u00a0Remedio said that the project was “years away<\/a>” from completion.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

Remedio declined to comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The building would have a capacity of 3,600 people and require 331 parking spaces.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
