This issue, we reached out to some friends of the Grapevine to ask one question: what does Bj\u00f6rk mean to Icelandic music? Here are some of the responses.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAt 60 years of age, Bj\u00f6rk is the embodiment of the restless soul of Icelandic music.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She broke down the isolation of a small island and expanded Iceland\u2019s borders, turning it into an international symbol of creativity and originality. Her works \u2014 ranging from punk, electronic music, and symphonic experiments to digital art \u2014 have literally expanded the meaning of the term <\/span>Icelandic music<\/span><\/i>. She has shown, and continues to show, that nature, technology, and emotion can unite in a single voice that is at once raw, contemplative, and spiritual. All younger Icelandic artists who create fearlessly \u2014 from avant-garde composers to pop musicians \u2014 are in her debt.\u201d<\/span> \u2014 J\u00f3nas Sen, musician\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cJust like there are 60 seconds in one minute, there are 60 years in Bj\u00f6rk\u2026 Once she played us a song, it was Prodigy\u2019s \u201cSmack My Bitch Up\u201d mashed up with Enya singing \u201cSail Away\u201d from \u201cOrinoco Flow\u201d. We can still appreciate it. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Volta<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Vespertine<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Homogenic<\/span><\/i>. Masterpieces. She musics like no other. The industry kind of made her into the stereotype of the Icelandic musician, and all Icelandic artists will probably forever be compared to her. But it\u2019s fine, it\u2019s a cool stereotype. She lives her truth everyday, dressed like a mushroom in Kaffi Vest on a Tuesday. A living proof of creativity in every 60 seconds of every 60 minutes in every hour of every day of every year of her 60 years.\u201d <\/span>\u2014 Amor Vincit Omnia, band\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cBj\u00f6rk is the past, the current and the future. She is the moment.\u201d<\/span> \u2014 Br\u00edet, musician\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cShe put Iceland on the map long before Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I listened to <\/span>Debut<\/span><\/i> on my discman which was hidden in my school blazer in a Sydney school ground in 1994. I don\u2019t know anybody on my side of the world who knew where or what Iceland was until then.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because she made such a huge impression in the music industry, Iceland has now become synonymous with great and original music.
