For Gen X, it was pop stars like Madonna and Michael Jackson. For Millennials, it is comedians. In a recent interview with\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IHHLiPy_nd4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Vulture\u2019s\u00a0Good One\u00a0podcast;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>Vulture\u2019s\u00a0<i>Good One\u00a0<\/i>podcast<\/span><\/a><span>, comic Jay Jurden spoke with host Jesse David Fox, where Fox challenged Jurden: \u201cDefend being a millennial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>His defense? Millennials are the generation that forever changed comedy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>\u201cOoh, millennials, we&#8217;re the generation that made you become better at comedy,\u201d Jurden replied.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no comedy boom without millennials. So, if you want to get famous from standup, from sketch, from internet videos, millennials are the only reason that is an income source.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>That might sound like a bold statement if you grew up loving the standup of people like Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_35547_ask-the-photographer-if-you-can-buy-pictures-of-other-people-and-14-more-apex-george-carlin-jokes.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:George Carlin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>George Carlin<\/span><\/a><span>. They were at the top of the standup world, famous in the way rock stars were\u2014but Jurden&#8217;s point becomes sharper with some context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>In\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cracked.com\/article_43424_ken-jennings-is-working-with-a-comedy-coach-to-bring-more-laughs-to-jeopardy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ken Jennings;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>Ken Jennings<\/span><\/a><span>\u2019 book\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Planet-Funny-Comedy-Took-Culture\/dp\/1501100580\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Planet Funny: How Comedy Took Over Our Culture;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span><i>Planet Funny: How Comedy Took Over Our Culture<\/i><\/span><\/a><span>, the author cited a 2012 study about how people define themselves. That Nielsen survey found that 88 percent of millennials do that through their sense of humor. Furthermore, 63 percent would rather be stuck in an elevator with their favorite comedian, rather than their favorite athlete or musician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>That\u00a0<i>Planet Funny\u00a0<\/i>info lends credence to Jurden\u2019s point, which he continued to expound on for Fox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/qhEiTFQ_WDKgib7bXBQ7EA--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTcyMDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/cracked_901\/ee41b1b7efa8de092701bef2a77a4455\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>\u201cIf you think a Millennial cringe comedy is terrible, some of it is, some of it is, but you have to thank us for creating a landscape that both focused on comedy being popular and made comedy better,\u201d Jurden continued.\u00a0 \u201cEveryone&#8217;s comedy acumen now is higher because of Millennials. So, you have more discerning taste because of us, because of\u00a0<i>30 Rock<\/i>, because of those years at SNL, because of Lonely Island, because of the fact that late night shows started to be like, we have to be pretty good now. We can&#8217;t just have a guy come on with snakes all the time. We love snakes, but we have to write some sketches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>When Millennials came of age, their personalities, interests, spending habits, consumer behaviors\u2014all of it was shaped by comedy far more \u00a0than previous generations. Now, as Gen Z take the mantle of shaping dominant culture, it might best time ever to make it as a comedian. It is easier than ever to find an audience in the digital age. As\u00a0<i>Daily Show<\/i> host and stand-up Josh Johnson recently pointed out on\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h0hre6S4LKc&amp;t=2982s&amp;pp=ygUYdHJldm9yIG5vYWggam9zaCBqb2huc29u\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Trevor Noah\u2019s podcast\u00a0What Now,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>Trevor Noah\u2019s podcast\u00a0<i>What Now<\/i>,<\/span><\/a><span> there\u2019s no need to be \u201cnumber one\u201d in comedy in 2025. Instead, you just need to find your own crowd who will stream your specials, engage with your TikToks, and buy tickets to your shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/SZe9t3zpo9SFV66q1V9irw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTcyMDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/cracked_901\/8f2c1da7e4d8cb91b0c4916467da003c\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Unlike Gen Z and Gen Alpha, Millennials didn\u2019t grow up consuming comedy through algorithms that hand fed you. As Fox said, \u201cnot having algorithms,&#8221; to curate your consumption based on what you like, but instead just having to turn on Comedy Central and just watch whatever was on because you like stand up, developed a Millennial appetite for comedy that grew a small segment of the entertainment industry into a major stakeholder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Jurden clarified that a lot of the comedy consumed by Millennials featured Gen X talent. That intake and obsession with comedy is a-now permanent ripple in our society.\u00a0 \u201cThere&#8217;s a reason why people go every month: \u2018These are my favorite clips from 30 Rock. These are my favorite Key &amp; Peele sketches.\u2019 cuz it&#8217;s not going away,\u201d Jurden continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Comedy is now so ingrained in our society that it has even changed advertising. A\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ct\/publication\/documents\/2022-04\/2022_04_26_Laughter_Chessey_Ipsos_0.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2022 study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>2022 study<\/span><\/a><span> from Ipsos revealed that 81 percent of consumers like when brands use humor. In fact, comedy is so central now that 80 percent of respondents would also see a brand \u201cin a more positive light if they partnered with their favorite comedic content producer,\u201d the study noted. For Gen Z and Millennials specifically, that stat jumps up to 90 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>There\u2019s also just more comedy available to consume now versus even just a decade ago. A 2024 report from\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-05-05\/stand-up-comedy-has-tripled-in-size-over-the-last-decade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bloomberg;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/span><\/a><span><i>\u00a0<\/i>noted that standup comedy has nearly tripled in size, from a revenue standpoint. In 2012, gross revenue from touring stand up comedians in the US was <\/span><span>$371.4 million. In 2023, it was $909.6 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/lZeCezsv.78hPeoQ_jtKjA--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTcyMDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/cracked_901\/cf46f7415d3e10ba0181347519b60a26\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>\u201cWhen I started, there were three or four active comedians who could fill even a small theater,\u201d Mike Berkowitz, the co-head of comedy at talent agency WME, told\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-05-05\/stand-up-comedy-has-tripled-in-size-over-the-last-decade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bloomberg;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span><i>Bloomberg<\/i><\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cNow there\u2019s hundreds.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>A lot of this boom can\u2019t exclusively be credited to Millennial consumption habits; while that generation might be the most likely to define themselves through their sense of humor, it\u2019s a chicken-or-the-egg situation. Just one year after the Nielsen study came out revealing Millennials&#8217; sense of self is primarily understood through what they laughed at, Netflix started funding new stand up specials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>In 2013, the streamer giant purchased specials from Mike Birbiglia, Iliza Shlesinger and Aziz Ansari. By 2017, the platform\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/comedy-standup-netflix-statistics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:released 50 or more specials per year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><span>released 50 or more specials per year<\/span><\/a><span>, effectively changing the entire stand-up market. Now with Reels and TikTok, finding new comedians has become even more accessible\u2014and YouTube has allowed comedians to build entire followings and make a living from just posting on that platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Millennials can\u2019t get the credit for sole credit for changing the comedy industry, as Jurden\u2019s defense suggested.
