The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the Royal Variety
\nPerformance on Wednesday evening, following a tradition that
\nstretches back to the reign of King George V.<\/p>\n
Dressed in a velvet green dress, the princess was visibly
\nexcited to meet Paddington Bear backstage following the performance
\nfrom the case of Paddington The Musical.<\/p>\n
The bear from Peru had become synonymous with the royals after
\nappearing in the famous sketch that became such a popular part of
\nQueen Elizabeth II\u2019s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.<\/p>\n
Paddington famously took tea at Buckingham Palace with The Queen
\nduring a recorded performance that was played, to the surprise of
\nmillions around the world, at the start of the Platinum Party on
\nthe third day of the Jubilee. The little bear finally got Elizabeth
\nII to reveal what was in her handbag \u2013 marmalade sandwiches.
\nHowever, the most moving moment came as the animated character
\npaused and said \u201cthank you\u201d to Queen Elizabeth II, for
\n\u201ceverything\u201d.<\/p>\n
When Elizabeth II died three months later, thousands of people
\nleft Paddington bear toys as tributes, and the Royal Parks had to
\nask people to stop leaving marmalade sandwiches as memorials
\nbecause they were rotting among the flowers.<\/p>\n
William and Kate were at the Royal Albert Hall for the
\nstar-studded show, held every year to raise money for former
\nperformers.<\/p>\n
Members of the Royal Family had attended since the show was
\nestablished in 1912. The debut had been meant to come a year
\nearlier, as King George had wanted to hold a Royal Variety show to
\nmark his coronation in 1911, but a fire at the chosen theatre meant
\nit had to be postponed. It had been held ever since with royal
\nsupport.<\/p>\n
This was the sixth Royal Variety Performance attended by the
\nPrince and Princess of Wales. Their previous appearance was in
\n2023, which proved to be one of Kate\u2019s last major engagements
\nbefore she became ill. The show will be broadcast on television at
\na later date.<\/p>\n
As well as Paddington The Musical, tars from another West End
\nshow also took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall, as the cast
\nof Les Mis\u00e9rables \u2013 including Michael Ball, Matt Lucas and Killian
\nDonnelly \u2013 performed in celebration of the hit musical\u2019s 40th
\nanniversary.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s Royal Variety Performance also included turns by
\nJessie J and Laufey.<\/p>\n
The event was hosted by comedian Jason Manford.<\/p>\n
