The Princess of Wales has become the second senior royal in less
\nthan 24 hours to appears in dazzling diamonds that once belonged to
\none of the most famous names in London society.<\/p>\n
For her visit to the Royal Variety Performance, Kate chose a
\npair of earrings that were left to the Royal Family by Margaret
\nGreville, the society legend who also first owned the tiara that
\nQueen Camilla wore just hours before to the Diplomatic
\nReception.<\/p>\n
The two pieces that have done all the dazzling in the past few
\ndays are part of the Greville collection which was left to Queen
\nElizabeth, later the Queen Mother by Margaret Greville.<\/p>\n

Mrs Greville had no descendants of her own to pass on her
\nsubstantial jewellery collection to. She was also worried that the
\nroyals might be a little light on serious gems and so decided the
\nbest thing to do was to bequeath the then Queen Consort all her
\ndiamonds, emeralds and rubies.<\/p>\n
It also meant that her impressive gem collection became part of
\nthe royal jewellery box \u2013 and that we\u2019re all still talking about
\nMrs. Greville decades after her death.<\/p>\n
The earrings chosen by Kate are well worth a conversation. They
\nare chandelier style and feature a huge range of cuts of diamonds
\nincluding baguette, square and trapeze cut. No prizes for guessing
\nthat these earrings are by Cartier \u2013 they bear all the hallmarks of
\nthe classic designs from the jewellery house.<\/p>\n
The result is a shimmering wall of sparkle that didn\u2019t stay with
\nthe Queen Mother for long. She gave the earrings to her elder
\ndaughter, Elizabeth, on her wedding day which makes Kate\u2019s pick
\neven more special. For the Princess of Wales wore them on the eve
\nof the 78th anniversary of the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II to
\nPrince Philip.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not known whether Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother,
\ngave the earrings to her daughter just before her big day so it
\ncould be that they were worn on the exact anniversary of them
\ncoming into the possession of the late Queen.<\/p>\n
The Princess of Wales has worn them for several years and most
\nrecently used them at the State Banquet for the President of France
\nat Windsor Castle in July.<\/p>\n

Mrs Greville has been quite the star this past week as Queen
\nCamilla chose to wear one of the most unusual pieces left by her to
\nthe Royal Family.<\/p>\n
The diadem also caused some discussion as it has only ever been
\nseen in public before being worn by Princess Eugenie on her wedding
\nday.<\/p>\n
The piece features diamonds and emeralds in a kokoshnik style \u2013
\na design made popular at the court of the Tsars in the 19th century
\nand based on traditional headdresses in rural Russia.<\/p>\n
The Queen wore the diadem with an all diamond necklace shaped as
\na serpent that she inherited from one of her grandmothers, most
\nlikely Sonia Keppel.<\/p>\n
However, it is Margaret Greville who is getting all the royal
\nheadlines this week as her legacy continues to sparkle over 80
\nyears after her death.<\/p>\n
