{"id":2169406,"date":"2025-11-20T23:21:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T23:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2169406"},"modified":"2025-11-20T23:21:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T23:21:26","slug":"de-la-soul-discuss-new-album-cabin-in-the-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/de-la-soul-discuss-new-album-cabin-in-the-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"De La Soul Discuss New Album &#8216;Cabin in the Sky&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For iconic Long Island, New York hip-hop group De La Soul, 2023 was the very definition of bittersweet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After decades of sample clearance issues and lengthy disputes with former record label Tommy Boy, the trio\u2019s first six albums \u2014 including 1989\u2019s game-changing masterpiece<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 Feet High and Rising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 finally reached streaming services on March 3rd of that year. What should have been a celebration for a hard-won victory was marred by the tragic February 12th passing of founding member David \u201cTrugoy the Dove\u201d Jolicoeur, 54, who\u2019d been living with congestive heart failure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the urging of Trugoy\u2019s sister Cindy, the group\u2019s remaining members Kelvin \u201cPosdnuos\u201d Mercer, 56, and Vincent \u201cMaseo\u201d Mason, 55, decided to continue as De La Soul to honour their fallen friend and keep his legacy alive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That mission has culminated in ninth album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the group\u2019s first LP since 2016\u2019s Grammy-nominated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the Anonymous Nobody\u2026 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the latest instalment of record label Mass Appeal\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legend Has It\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series, which has seen the release of new albums from celebrated rap veterans like Slick Rick, Mobb Deep, and Ghostface Killah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amed after a 1943 film musical Posdnuos came across while watching TV<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains several songs Trugoy recorded before his passing. While not physically present, Posdnuos says his fellow MC and creative foil was still a crucial force throughout the creation of the album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Cabin In The Sky\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"400\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/0yBlUg27MbywASeGd1uNIA?si=JqJ-Ksz7SiGmBl6-Dm_52Q&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was right there with us doing it \u2014 his energy and his spirit, his influence on the way I thought about things lyrically,\u201d says Posdnuos from a hotel in New York City. \u201cCertain songs that we used were actual songs that he created, whether it\u2019s the last song on the album, \u2018Don\u2019t Push Me\u2019, which Dave produced and rhymed on. The beginning of the album, \u2018YUHDONTSTOP\u2019 \u2014 that was a bit of music that Dave produced that I extended and made something out of. So his energy is really felt throughout the entire album because he physically participated. That\u2019s what I love about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\"> Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s that old saying of \u2018steering the ship\u2019 when someone transitions and they become your angel from this other plane, looking out for you and allowing all these positive things to happen for you. It\u2019s been like that since he left us. All these great things that happened with the catalogue and the music being accepted and so many other opportunities. It\u2019s the same with this album. His presence is there. People are loving what they\u2019re hearing and that\u2019s just so satisfying because we put a lot into this and we enjoy it for ourselves. God willing, everyone else will feel the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBased on the title and conceptually how the album flows, it sounds like he\u2019s working on the album from the heavens,\u201d adds Maseo. \u201cHe did the album.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understandably, both Posdnuos and Maseo say that operating as a two-man unit rather than a trio has taken some getting used to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPretty much since [Dave passed] we had still been doing shows, so that in itself was a gigantic adjustment,\u201d says Posdnuos. \u201cJust not seeing Dave and feeling like Dave was about to get on the stage and perform, but then I\u2019d think, \u2018Oh wait a minute, I normally would do Dave\u2019s ad libs, but now I gotta do a whole verse.\u2019 Things like that took a minute for us to get used to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo for me, when it came down to the album, I felt like I was already used to certain ways of him not being there, and I just kind of envisioned him there with me, giving his advice, putting in his magic that he would normally do on a track. And his quality control \u2014 Dave was very, very, very picky when it came to music, to beats, to how things were said, how they sounded. And I did my best to keep that energy like, \u2018Yo, if Dave was here, Dave would tell me to say this rhyme better. If Dave was here, he would tell me clean up the sample like that.\u2019 All that was placed into the album.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLike every aspect of being De La, we cannot wake up and not think about potential things he would think about,\u201d says Maseo. \u201cWe can\u2019t even move forward without knowing that it just automatically exists, you know what I mean? Just caring about the things we know he would care about. And certain artists you could ask for, maybe they didn\u2019t have the time, and then you find someone else that fills that space just about correctly. So it\u2019s been an amazing success to me at this point that we\u2019ve got everything done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have to echo what Pos is saying as well, at the same time it being very therapeutic to our loss as well,\u201d adds Maseo. \u201cAnd I mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss \u2014 the fans as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Featuring an intro and 19 full songs, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the second-longest run time of any De La Soul album at over 71 minutes (1991\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De La Soul Is Dead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes the top spot with over 73 minutes), yet it still flows as a cohesive body of work \u2014 something that the duo put in considerable effort to achieve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing in a studio and hearing a certain song, it would be like, \u2018Hey, this song feels like it could go there, but not only that, let\u2019s build an entire other song around it,\u2019\u201d says Posdnuos. \u201cLike having the idea for [the Bananarama and Roy Ayers sampling] \u2018Cruel Summers Bring FIRE LIFE!!\u2019 \u2014 it really came about because the \u2018Day in the Sun\u2019 song already existed and I thought it could be cool to have this buildup of tension and issues between a man and a woman or two people who love each other and then it leads up to \u2018Day in the Sun\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"De La Soul - &quot;Day In The Sun (Gettin&#039; Wit U)&quot; ft. Q-Tip &amp; Yummy Bingham (Visualizer)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VqDyTvMwpFg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although primarily known as the group\u2019s DJ, Maseo has intermittently rhymed on De La Soul songs over the years, and he makes a welcome return to the mic on jubilant album <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlight \u201cWill Be\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou probably gonna get more of me [rhyming] in the future, but not because of Dave not being here. It was pretty much gonna happen anyway, you know what I mean?,\u201d says Maseo. \u201cIt was time for me to get back on the mic. When you look at the comment sections over the years, everybody has been asking for me to get back on the mic, so I\u2019ve been making my attempts. It\u2019s all about the right song. With the next album you\u2019ll probably have more of me rapping.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Posdnuos and Maseo says it\u2019s unlikely a shelved 2013 album called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re Welcome<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will ever see the light of day, although fans can still expect the long-awaited third part of their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art Official Intelligence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trilogy, an ode to DJs, that was promised all the way back on De La Soul\u2019s 2001 album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AOI: Bionix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] was definitely the Pete [Rock] and DJ Premier project that we were supposed to do [the previously announced EP <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premium Soul on the Rocks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], but that morphed into something greater,\u201d says Maseo. \u201cI\u2019m hoping that in time, Godspeed, we get to doing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AOI 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> album that we committed to. It\u2019s really just meeting our creative commitments to ourselves and our fans. The trilogy was always something that we wanted to complete, but it was difficult to do it when the first two [instalments] weren\u2019t even available, streaming wise.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maseo rhyming isn\u2019t the only surprise appearance on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The album also features a murder\u2019s row of top-tier MCs including Nas, Black Thought, Slick Rick, Common, and Killer Mike. The biggest surprise, however, is a cameo from fellow Native Tongues alumni and A Tribe Called Quest founder Q-Tip, who hasn\u2019t dropped a verse on a De La Soul song since 1991\u2019s \u201cA Roller Skating Jam Named \u2018Saturdays\u2019\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s our brother, man,\u201d says Posdnuos affectionately. \u201cI call him my \u2018little big brother\u2019 \u2019cause he\u2019s younger than me, but he\u2019s larger than life and I respect his opinion on a lot of things. I had spoken to Tip and I was like, \u2018Yo man, come around \u2019cause I\u2019m gonna be in New York, just come around to the studio, I need that energy.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m there for you.\u2019 So one day he came by and he was just listening to music \u2019cause Tip, he loves us like that. He\u2019ll be honest, like, \u2018Yo man, you can hit that rhyme better.\u2019 Or he\u2019ll be like, \u2018Yo, Premier did this? You should tell him to not put too much of that in there.\u2019 He was really helpful with his ideas. Even if it was stuff that I didn\u2019t want to do, I was just grateful for him being honest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe was listening to the song that he got on [\u201cDay in the Sun (Gettin\u2019 Wit U)\u201d], and he wasn\u2019t even supposed to be on the song. He\u2019s just listening to it, and I saw him out the side of my eye getting really hyped. And he\u2019s like \u2014 he\u2019s so stupid [laughs] \u2014 \u2018You black motherfucker! Why didn\u2019t you ask me to be on this record?!\u2019 And then everyone just starts dying laughing [laughs]. I was like, \u2018Word, you want to get on this?\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018YEAH I wanna get on this!\u2019 It was so funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what their favourite track on the album is, both Posdnuos and Maseo struggle to land on a single choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne minute it could be \u2018Cabin in the Sky\u2019, one minute it could be \u2018Different World\u2019. \u2018Run It Back\u2019 \u2014 it\u2019s too many,\u201d says\u00a0 Posdnuos. \u201cIt depends, but I would say right now, maybe \u2018Run It Back\u2019 [which samples \u201cEvery Little Thing She Does Is Magic\u201d by the Police]. I love the group the Police. I love the fact that the producer Supa Dave West flipped a Police record backwards and made it work so amazing. And I love the fact that even Nas, when he heard it, he felt the same way I did, and he just allowed the spirits to take over his hand and knock that rhyme out just like that. The energy around that record is so amazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t lie, I\u2019m torn,\u201d says Maseo. \u201cThere\u2019s a couple of them doing it for me, you know what I mean? The one with Black Thought [\u201cEN EFF\u201d, produced by DJ Premier], \u2018Run It Back\u2019, \u2018The Package\u2019, the title track\u2026 I\u2019m torn. There\u2019s a lot of cool shit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"De La Soul - &quot;The Package&quot; (Visualizer)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u9N994FmnxU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few words spoken by Maseo near the beginning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sum up the album succinctly: \u201cJust be ready to get that feeling back \u2014 the memories of the good times. And don\u2019t run away from the bad ones either, \u2019cause it\u2019s all a part of life.\u201d Although grief has placed Posdnuos and Maseo where they are today, so has a fruitful creative partnership \u2014 and friendship \u2014 that has existed for close to four decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLosing Dave is losing Dave, meaning losing him in the physical, but we\u2019ve done our best to understand what he means to us, what he will always mean to us, and that in itself is a blessing,\u201d says Posdnuos. \u201cTo look at his life and know all that he\u2019s done, all that he accomplished \u2013 he lived like five lives, you know what I\u2019m saying? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people who don\u2019t get to do and see the things [he did] and go be a part of the many things that we\u2019re all blessed to be a part of as De La Soul. You can have someone who leaves this plane and they may not have accomplished things the way everyone would love to see them accomplish things, and that could be a reason to be super sad about it. But it was nothing but amazing and great thoughts we had and looking back on Dave, it was important for that to shine through the music, as opposed to just concentrating only on him leaving us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what Trugoy would think of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabin in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Posdnuos\u2019 answer is immediate and emphatic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think Dave would love the album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>De La Soul\u2019s ninth album Cabin in the Sky is out now on Mass Appeal.
