{"id":2169587,"date":"2025-11-21T01:16:33","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T01:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2169587"},"modified":"2025-11-21T01:16:33","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T01:16:33","slug":"star-panel-to-consider-moviegoing-in-an-evolving-marketplace-arts-entertainment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/star-panel-to-consider-moviegoing-in-an-evolving-marketplace-arts-entertainment\/","title":{"rendered":"Star Panel to Consider Moviegoing in an Evolving Marketplace | Arts &#038; Entertainment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Changing audience tastes, the rise of streaming platforms, and post-COVID doldrums are among the challenges faced by the filmmaking industry as it navigates the evolving landscape of traditional moviegoing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carsey-Wolf Center panelists Jason Reitman, left, Maggie Mackay, Brad Silbering, and Jackie Brenneman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>But as moviemakers adapt, optimism remains, despite troubling headlines and disappointing box office numbers in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>To unpack the details, UC Santa Barbara\u2019s Carsey-Wolf Center is hosting \u201cConnectivity: Moviegoing and Film Exhibition in Flux,\u201d a discussion among industry experts, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Pollock Theater.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free to attend, but reservations are recommended.<\/p>\n<p>The panel includes Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman, who directed \u201cJuno,\u201d \u201cUp in the Air\u201d and \u201cSaturday Night\u201d; Maggie Mackay, executive director of the nonprofit Vidiots Foundation; filmmaker and UCSB alum Brad Silbering (\u201cCasper\u201d and \u201cMoonlight Mile\u201d); and exhibition strategist Jackie Brenneman, founding partner of The Fithian Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that streaming services and Covid impacted theatrical moviegoing,\u201d said Ross Melnick, the center\u2019s interim director, who will moderate the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>There have been other factors, as well, including industry strikes by writers and actors in 2023\u201324 and marketplace confusion surrounding movie release dates that differ theatrically and online.<\/p>\n<p>However, Melnick said, \u201cWe have also seen huge theatrical blockbusters,\u201d including the Barbenheimer simultaneous release of \u2018Barbie\u2019 and \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019 films in 2023. \u201cPlus, the popularity of anime \u2014 animation films produced in Japan \u2014 is at an all-time high, particularly among younger audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAudiences want both originality and familiarity, and theaters that are tuned into audience tastes are doing quite well,\u201d Melnick said. \u201cWhile there is definitely superhero fatigue, horror films continue to outperform, anime is rising exponentially in popularity, and original titles like \u2018Sinners\u2019 are breaking through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, people are flocking back into theaters to see their old favorites,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a new golden age for repertory theaters like Vidiots in Los Angeles.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How today\u2019s theater operators are tapping emerging cinephilia to rebuild audiences will be among many topics up for discussion.<\/p>\n<p>With insight, Reitman and Silbering are among the more than two dozen filmmakers who purchased the historic Fox Village Theater in Los Angeles, with the goal of preserving the landmark and maintaining it as a cultural institution for filmgoing.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Reitman and Rick Nicita, chair of American Cinematheque, announced a new partnership for programming the theater\u2019s forthcoming Village Directors Circle, scheduled to open in 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The event is part of the center\u2019s \u201cConnectivity\u201d programming to examine the ways people use media to connect with ideas and one another, from the shared experience of moviegoing to the collective bonds forged through storytelling and public dialogue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/carseywolf.ucsb.edu\">carseywolf.ucsb.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em> \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source www.noozhawk.com \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Changing audience tastes, the rise of streaming platforms, and post-COVID doldrums are among the challenges faced by the filmmaking industry as it navigates the evolving landscape of traditional moviegoing.
