The director of the upcoming Resident Evil<\/strong> reboot, Zach Cregger<\/strong>, gave an update on the film. He shared how he plans to build the movie straight from the games themselves \u2014 a direction that has fans curious about what a game-faithful adaptation could look like. Cregger, known for Barbarian and this year\u2019s Weapons, gave a sneak peek at his approach.<\/p>\n Zach Cregger made an admission in Deadline<\/a>\u2019s Crew Call<\/a> podcast interview when asked whether watching the older Resident Evil movies got him thinking about what he would change. \u201cI have never seen a Resident Evil movie,\u201d he said. He clarified that while he skipped the films, he has \u201cplayed the games religiously\u201d and feels \u201cintimately familiar with Resident Evil as a game franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n Cregger explained that he finds the games \u201cinherently cinematic,\u201d praising their structure and pacing. \u201cThere\u2019s something about the structure of those games and the pacing of those games that it\u2019s so thrilling to me, and I have never seen a movie that really leans into what those games offer,\u201d he said. Because of that, he couldn\u2019t compare his upcoming film to what the previous movies \u201cdo or don\u2019t do well,\u201d but emphasized what excites him: bringing the games\u2019 tone to the screen.<\/p>\n He added that he loves \u201cthe slow creeping dread that these games naturally kinda of exist in,\u201d and wants to experiment with the connection between video game mechanics and storytelling. \u201cThe idea of being able to make a video game structure in a narrative film or reverse back, make a narrative film with the video game structure\u2026 I can\u2019t believe that it hasn\u2019t happened yet,\u201d the filmmaker stated.<\/p>\n Calling the franchise \u201cso huge, so globally well respected,\u201d Cregger said it feels like \u201can honor\u201d to take it on. \u201cI am feeling very excited about this,\u201d he concluded on the Resident Evil update<\/a>.<\/p>\n Notably, the Resident Evil franchise began in the \u201990s as a PlayStation game before expanding to other platforms.
