In the West, one might label such a song \u201cunapologetic.\u201d In North Africa, where family is, in Manal\u2019s words, \u201calmost worshipped,\u201d it\u2019s controversial to say the least. <\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"c985f106-085c-497f-96ad-ecd8cb882397\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/SDTgjiwl83s\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Manal is no stranger to controversy. In her decade-long career \u2014 which started from asking friends to help her upload covers to YouTube (because her internet connection wasn\u2019t strong enough) to racking up over a million views in under a week \u2014 she has always used her music as a platform to address societal taboos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since her early days in rap songs like \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dh3kri7xZyk&amp;list=RDdh3kri7xZyk&amp;start_radio=1\">Taj<\/a>\u201d or her powerful <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/the-best-north-african-colors-performances\/189423\">COLORSxSTUDIOS<\/a> performance of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PTem4WiU2Ag&amp;list=RDPTem4WiU2Ag&amp;start_radio=1\">3ARI<\/a>,\u201d Manal has made a name for herself as the woman who breaks boundaries in Morocco\u2019s music scene and beyond. Since then, she has listened to the likes of <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheb Mami<\/span>, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheikha Rimitti<\/span>, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheb Hasni<\/span>, and <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheb Khalid<\/span> every single day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople loved ra\u00ef, but they didn\u2019t own the fact that they loved it. Now it\u2019s easier to say that they love ra\u00ef and nobody\u2019s going to judge,\u201d explains Manal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt represents me. The instruments of ra\u00ef have a rebellious vibe,\u201d she continues. \u201cBut the majority of ra\u00ef artists talk about heartbreak and love. I think it\u2019s interesting to write ra\u00ef [music] in different subjects.\u201d <\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"8a652794-b7b4-4960-b9b8-cb5fbc38b14b\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Zk74LwtVo_U\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Manal\u2019s first step into owning and working with her culture was the transition from writing songs in French and English to embracing her native Darija, the Moroccan dialect. \u201cYou can say anything in English, but trying to say the same thing in Darija is a challenge,\u201d she laughs. \u201cWe have a lot of kh and q, and these don\u2019t really sound nice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Morocco, it felt natural to write in French, the country\u2019s second language. Watching MTV and other American TV channels, all her favorite artists were singing in English and French &#8211; Rihanna, Beyonc\u00e9, and Celine Dion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day I woke up and realized that I have a responsibility to put my language first,\u201d she says. \u201cI need to be proud of being Moroccan, but it was very hard, because I didn\u2019t know how to write songs in Arabic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manal received help and guidance from an interesting mix of people: her mother, herself a painter and writer who guided her in all her first songs, as well as rappers like\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/on-nafida-moroccan-rapper-small-x-rises-above-the-noise-and-into-underexplored-musical-territory\/230415\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Shayfeen<\/span><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b>and <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">El Grande Toto<\/span>, who are now leading Morocco\u2019s rising music scene alongside Manal.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"744126d8-8779-4ed0-a722-3a29fd72eb3e\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/qFT76NtIg24\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super proud of the Moroccan scene. We have amazing artists in all genres,\u201d she says. \u201cTen years ago, we didn\u2019t have many artists from our generation, and nobody had nothing to lose, which was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was harder back then, because of weak internet and simple technology. \u201cMy brother would film me, and it was so tricky to connect the camera with the laptop,\u201d she remembers with a laugh. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t trade it for anything, because that\u2019s what makes us tough today.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, society and the music industry have not evolved as rapidly when it comes to topics around patriarchy and women\u2019s rights, which means that Manal\u2019s work is far from done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a woman in the Arab World, you\u2019ll get judged even for breathing,\u201d she says. \u201cBut as women, we have a superpower: emotional intelligence. Bringing these stories to the fore is more important than the music itself. \u201cUnfortunately, people don\u2019t want to hear about the pain and lives of women,\u201d she says. \u201cThey prefer [entertainment].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that she has a daughter, Manal has no intention of slowing down her mission to tackle taboo subjects and make them visible for the world to see, whether it wants to or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If anything, having a baby has made her more aware of the art she wants to make and the people she works with. Manal is gearing up to release a string of singles, fueled by a new energy she\u2019s tapping into. Will this energy be difficult to maintain while raising a child?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels less stressful, because I have more to focus on than [just] music,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I released my other songs, I was always checking what was happening, but now I have more things to think about.
