The actor, 39, who played prank-loving twin George Weasley alongside his real-life brother James’ Fred Weasley in the iconic film series, exclusively tells PEOPLE that while his kids are slowly realizing just how big a part of their dad\u2019s life the franchise was, he\u2019s in no rush to make them superfans.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be honest, my eldest is eight, and she knows, obviously, of Potter,\u201d says Oliver, who shares his two daughters with his wife, Katy Humpage. \u201cShe knows what it is because quite a few friends at school are really into it. But I\u2019ve never pressed it on her. I want her to discover it for herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, the eldest simply knows it\u2019s something special her dad once did \u2014 and something that changed their family\u2019s lives. \u201cShe knows that it\u2019s what Daddy did when he was younger,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s also afforded us this amazing life that we live. We\u2019ve been able to travel, go to different places \u2014 all because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
His youngest, though, is still connecting the dots \u2014 and had a hilarious moment of realization during a recent family trip to Universal Orlando. \u201cWe went on the Hogwarts Express train and she was sat next to me when we \u2018fly in\u2019 on broomsticks,\u201d Oliver recalls, \u201cshe sat there looking at me, then looking at the screen, and going, \u2018Dad, why are you there?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cIt\u2019ll take a while for her to quite work it out. She\u2019s like, \u2018Why is your hair that color?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
That sense of childlike wonder \u2014 and the joy of revisiting old memories \u2014 also extends to how Oliver looks back on the Harry Potter films themselves. While he admits he still cringes a bit at watching his younger self on screen, certain moments always bring him back.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy favorite scene would probably be the Quidditch World Cup,\u201d he says, recalling Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. \u201cThe whole sequence from going to the stadium to the campsite when all the fire kicks up \u2014 it was amazing.”<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re big soccer fans back home, and I remember being told, \u2018What would you do on the terraces at your football club?\u2019 So we just went for it,” he says.<\/p>\n
He laughs, remembering how their enthusiasm had to be reined in a bit. \u201cWe had to change some of the language the second time around,\u201d he jokes. \u201cBut it really brought in that sports fan energy. That day was just so much fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another memory holds a special place in his heart \u2014 even if it makes him wince a little to watch now. \u201cIt\u2019s probably going to sound silly, but the first time you see the Weasleys at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters,\u201d Oliver says. \u201cIt was the first time you get introduced to the characters, and it was the first time I was ever on film.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cI hate watching it because my voice is so high. I can\u2019t even pretend I had a deep voice when I was a kid \u2014 and it\u2019s on every Christmas, so everyone always hears it.\u201d<\/p>\n
