Several experts have weighed in on Meghan Markle<\/strong> being announced by her Duchess of Sussex title.<\/p>\n

Richard Fitzwilliams<\/strong> told the Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> that Meghan\u2019s actions break royal protocol. In reality the Harper Bazaar\u2019s<\/em> journalist should have been announced to Meghan \u2014 rather than the duchess being announced. (Debrett\u2019s etiquette guide states something similar.)<\/p>\n

\u201cMeghan wants to have a halo in the interview by saying nothing nasty about anyone and being full of positive thoughts,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cHowever, in her use of her title in this pricelessly comic way she speaks volumes about herself. She could be alone and be announced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan Markle<\/strong><\/a> apparently gets announced by her title \u2014 Duchess of Sussex \u2014 when entering a new location. At least, according to her recent Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em><\/a> cover story. But it seems that\u2019s not out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom an etiquette standpoint, using a British title either socially or professionally globally \u2014 including the U.S. \u2014 is not unusual or improper,\u201d etiquette expert Myka Meier<\/strong> told Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively. \u201cEspecially, when the person is widely known by that title.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meier further explained, \u201cThe choice of how each member of the royal family wishes to be addressed is ultimately up to that individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Meghan\u2019s case specifically, \u201cher title would be the formal way of address which is likely how her team was trained to introduce her,\u201d Meier added. \u201cIt is more a matter of personal style or preference of each titled person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan\u2019s cover story dropped on Wednesday, November 19, and the main image featured the duchess wearing a black blazer with a belt, sitting on a black stool. \u201cMeghan, Duchess of Sussex, Meets Her Moment,\u201d the coverline read.<\/p>\n

Within the story, journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge<\/strong> recalled Meghan being announced by her title on two separate occasions \u2014 the first when they meet at the La Brea Tar Pits and the section when Greenidge is meeting Meghan at a friend\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

\u201cA golf cart pulls up, the gravel crunching beneath its tires. \u2018The Duchess of Sussex,\u2019 someone in the scrum announces,\u201d the profile reads \u2014 this is the first instance of her title. \u201cMeghan descends, dressed in wide-leg trousers, a silk blouse, and a small pair of pav\u00e9-diamond studs by the Ukrainian brand Guzema. They were a gift from her husband, Prince Harry<\/strong>, picked up on a recent trip to Kyiv with his Invictus Games Foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second came about halfway into the piece.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a grand brownstone on the Upper East Side that belongs to one of Meghan\u2019s friends,\u201d Greenidge wrote. \u201cWhen I enter, the house manager announces, \u2018Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,\u2019 even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan\u2019s name has been a hot topic this year, since her Netflix show With Love, Meghan<\/em><\/a> premiered in March. Guest Mindy Kaling<\/strong>, continued referring to her friend as \u201cMeghan Markle\u201d in her episode<\/a> during the first season.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou keep saying, \u2018Meghan Markle.\u2019 You know I\u2019m \u2018Sussex\u2019 now?\u201d Meghan said at one point. Meghan\u2019s name did technically change when she married Prince Harry in 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cI share my [\u2018Sussex\u2019] name with my children,\u201d Meghan said during the same episode. \u201cI didn\u2019t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to say, \u2018This is our family name!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Months later, Meghan got the opportunity to clarify the name debacle after her clip with Kaling continued to go viral.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you Meghan Sussex? Are you Meghan, Duchess of Sussex?\u201d Emily Chang<\/strong> asked Meghan on The Circuit<\/em><\/a> in August. \u201cIs Markle even on your passport anymore? Is it, we don\u2019t use that term anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n
