Princess Anne underlined her long-standing commitment to equine
\nwelfare on Friday afternoon as she attended the World Horse Welfare
\nAnnual Conference in London, accompanied by her daughter, Zara
\nTindall. The event, held at the Royal Geographical Society, brought
\ntogether international specialists to examine the latest research
\ninto horse behaviour and wellbeing.<\/p>\n
Princess Anne, who has served as President of the charity since
\n2000, presided over a programme that invited delegates to consider
\n\u201cthe world through the horse\u2019s eyes\u201d. The theme drew on a growing
\nbody of scientific work challenging long-held assumptions about
\nequine management and training.<\/p>\n
In a keynote address, Roly Owers, Chief Executive of World Horse
\nWelfare, said that advances in behavioural science were reshaping
\nmodern understanding of how horses experience their
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have learned a great deal in recent years,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cEvidence is emerging that obliges us to reassess what constitutes
\na good life for the horses in our care, and to recognise the limits
\nof what they can and cannot cope with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speakers included veterinarians, researchers, elite riders and
\nanimal-care specialists from Europe, Asia and the United States.
\nSessions were chaired by Caroline Nokes MP, with a discussion panel
\nlater led by David Eades, the former BBC presenter.<\/p>\n
Zara Tindall, who is a long-standing patron of the charity,
\ncontributed to the closing panel, reflecting on what the world
\nlooks like through the eyes of a horse.<\/p>\n
Zara said: \u201cI think seeing through their eyes is all about
\npartnership, it\u2019s feeling them every day and how different they
\ncome out, being receptive to that and working with that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Princess Anne\u2019s presence served to reinforce her decades-long
\nassociation with equestrian affairs and her personal advocacy for
\nrehoming. In 2013 she adopted a horse, Annie, through the charity,
\nand has since encouraged owners to consider rehomed animals. At the
\ntime, she observed: \u201cRehoming offers a clearer understanding of an
\nanimal\u2019s background. It allows people to make a tangible
\ndifference.\u201d<\/p>\n
World Horse Welfare, founded in 1920 following the work of Marta
\nCunningham with injured servicemen returning from the First World
\nWar, now operates internationally. The charity provides rescue,
\nrehabilitation and advocacy programmes and works closely with
\ngovernments, veterinary bodies and sporting organisations. More
\nthan 800 delegates from the UK and abroad registered for this
\nyear\u2019s conference, which was also streamed online with simultaneous
\ninterpretation.<\/p>\n
