MUSIC TO THE MAX<\/strong>:\u00a0Xana Romeo<\/strong> releases the first single from her upcoming album on Max Romeo<\/strong>\u2019s birthday!<\/p>\n

I once had the pleasure of hearing Azana Makeda Smith,<\/strong> aka Xana Romeo,<\/strong> buss out a flawless operatic scale just as the birds were rising up. That was back when she was working on her second studio album, The Roots of X<\/strong>, released 2021. Now, with the upcoming release of her third offering, due out in January 2026, you can expect to hear some well-placed, immaculately controlled trills as Xana<\/strong> continues to develop as a young Roots artist. The \u2018trill-effect\u2019 is just one of the distinct sounds that Xana<\/strong> contributes to the Reggae legacy that she was born into.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first taste of this album is a single of significance. Over All<\/strong> features Max Romeo<\/strong> singing some ancient biblical verse, and was recorded shortly before his death in April 2025. \u201cThe song is being released on November 22nd,\u201d<\/em> says Xana<\/strong>, \u201cthat\u2019s my dad\u2019s birthday. So this means a lot to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>

She\u2019s not the only one for whom Max<\/strong>\u2019s contribution will forever touch deep. Micah Shemaiah<\/strong>, who features on the album, says, \u201cI loved working on that project. I have a feeling is going be a historic album.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Dub Wizard Omar \u2018Jallanzo\u2019 Johnson, <\/strong>who participated in the recording session for the single Over All<\/strong> remotely, being abroad at the time. He laughs when recollecting the day that Max<\/strong> added his vocals. \u201cYou know them old school man?\u201d <\/em>Lanzo<\/strong> says of Max<\/strong>\u2019s professionalism. \u201cHim just went in the studio, him siddung, listen to the riddim, cock him head, light him spliff: One cut, like a champ. Then a talk normal like him don\u2019t just create history to bloodcleet.\u201d <\/em>Lanzo<\/strong> worked on the Over All<\/strong> mix after Max<\/strong> passed, and says that hearing his voice is when \u201cit hit me hard.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Addis Pablo,<\/strong> himself branching out from the musical seeds planted by his late father, Augustus Pablo<\/strong>, adds some melodica to the mix. And there we have it: Max Romeo<\/strong>\u2019s roots are firmly in place. Perched high on the branches is Xana<\/strong>, ready to further the works from the Reggae family tree that supports her, from this realm and the next, as she takes flight.\u00a0<\/p>\n
