Tom Cruise has finally won an (honourary) Oscar, but Hollywood’s most famous sprinter isn’t slowing down. The Mission: Impossible star (and proud owner of a meteorite Rolex) is currently in production on a new movie with another Oscar winner, director Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu. But what is the movie? Little is known about it right now, but here’s all that we do know.<\/p>\n

At the 16th Governors Awards, Tom Cruise received an Academy Honorary Award for his “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community.” I\u00f1\u00e1rritu was at the ceremony in Los Angeles where he presented the honorary Oscar to Cruise. In a 12-minute-long speech, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu praised Cruise’s artistry as being “built on micro decisions” that is as “carefully engineered as his most dangerous stunts.”<\/p>\n

“He’s never lost his sense of purpose, because Tom Cruise doesn’t just make movies. He is movies,” I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said in a moment that drew applause.<\/p>\n

Continued I\u00f1\u00e1rritu: “He’s breached generations. Audiences who first met him in the ’80s brought their children and now their grandchildren to fly again. He has remained a constant in our collective imaginations not by following fashions but by setting standards. In a world of shortcuts, he takes the long way. In the era of quick cuts, he chooses endurance. He has resisted being swallowed by brands, social media, streaming, pixels, and endless soulless exposure. And by doing that, he has kept the mystery and mystique needed to be the biggest film star in the world.”<\/p>\n

I\u00f1\u00e1rritu has a lot to say about Tom Cruise these days, because they’re currently at work on something new together: an untitled black comedy, which wrapped filming in the UK in May 2025.<\/p>\n

While the movie is tentatively titled Judy, an official plot summary hasn’t been released to the public. What is known is that it stars Tom Cruise along with a packed supporting cast. Surrounding Cruise in the movie will be Sandra H\u00fcller (Anatomy of a Fall), John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and House of the Dragon’s Emma D’Arcy. There is also a confirmed release date: October 2, 2026.<\/p>\n

Back in May, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu teased the film’s direction in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. \u201cAll I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions,\u201d he said. “It\u2019s insane. It\u2019s scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me. But I don\u2019t like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little. I felt Birdman was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that. And Tom makes me laugh every single day. He has this total commitment, this total madness.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Cruise received his Oscar, the actor shared a behind the scenes photo with I\u00f1\u00e1rritu on the set of their mystery movie. In the caption, Cruise wrote that the photo was “taken last year” during rehearsals.<\/p>\n

“Alejandro, 25 years ago I watched your first film, the classic Amores Perros,” Cruise said. “This weekend, 25 years later, I was deeply moved to have been presented the Honorary Oscar by you, my dear friend. I cannot wait to share our new film with you all next year!”<\/p>\n

For now, I\u00f1\u00e1rritu and Cruise’s movie will remain shrouded in secret, but maybe this time next year we’ll be talking about its Oscar chances in 2027.<\/p>\n
