The release came after the House Democrats on the Oversight Committee first dropped emails <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">indicating that the US President knew more of Epstein\u2019s activities than previously revealed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spent months denying any knowledge of Epstein\u2019s sex-trafficking ring, calling the allegations a \u201choax.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want you to realise that that dog that hasn\u2019t barked is Trump\u2026[Victim] spent hours at my house with him, he has never once been mentioned,\u201d Epstein wrote in an email to long-time confidante Ghislaine Maxwell in 2011. The email was one of the three released by the Democrats in the House Oversight Committee. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The subsequent <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/oversight-committee-releases-additional-epstein-estate-documents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">emails and records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published by the House Oversight Committee on 12 November set off a scramble to understand the reach of Epstein. The release of his emails has been a major issue plaguing the Trump presidency over the summer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A number of Republicans, led primarily by Representative Thomas Massie, have argued for the release of Epstein\u2019s files held by the US government. Trump attempted to persuade Republican lawmakers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">back away from a measure demanding the US Justice Department to release the Epstein files. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on Tuesday<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Trump backtracked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The call to release Epstein\u2019s emails and records \u2014 a call originally from the political Right \u2014 became a part of Trump\u2019s \u2018Make America Great Again! (MAGA)\u2019 movement, and has since come to find almost unanimous support in the US Congress. Trump, who has nurtured the MAGA movement for the last decade, has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perceived to have lost control over the movement in the last few months, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">particularly with the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> release of Epstein\u2019s records.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">signed the legislation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Wednesday<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> authorising his administration to release files concerning Epstein, bowing to pressure from his own party, the larger MAGA movement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and possibly showing the first weakness after almost eleven months of continued success in governing the US. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Trump, the moment is an inflection point over his control over the MAGA movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The best example of the pressure the release of Epstein\u2019s files <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had on the President\u2019s control over the Republican Party is<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/20\/marjorie-taylor-greene-trump-maga-georgia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> his split<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Taylor Greene, who has been one of the staunchest supporters of Trump, was also one of the loudest voices calling for the release of Epstein\u2019s files.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The administration\u2019s attempt to deflect the legislation got to the point where House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/adelita-grijalva-swearing-in-congress.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> refused to swear-in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Representative Adelita Grijalva for over 50 days, after she won a special election on 23 September for a seat held by her late father Ra\u00fal Grijalva in Arizona. Adelita Grijalva had promised to sign on to a bi-partisan petition to force the vote in the House demanding the US Justice Department to release the Epstein files.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Johnson defended his decision <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">saying that the delay was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> due to the House being in recess. However, Grijalva\u2019s signature would have been the 218th, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the last one, on the petition required to force the House vote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump\u2019s reluctance to release the files for months is interesting given that the American President had been good friends with the convicted sex offender in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, last week defended Trump. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stated that the President and Epstein\u2019s friendship ended after Trump kicked the dead financier out of his club <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 Mar-a-Lago \u2014 for being a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cpedophile and a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">creep\u201d almost two decades ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the middle of the storm around Epstein, his closest confidante Maxwell, who was found guilty of child sex trafficking in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in 2022, was potentially seeking a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/whistleblower-provided-house-democrats-ghislaine-maxwell-documents-spe-rcna244418\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">commutation of her sentence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Trump. However, despite the conviction, the financier maintained his links with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">influential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">individuals, especially Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UK\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> King Charles III\u2019s brother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Andrew gave up all his royal titles including the Duke of York over his ties to Epstein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Epstein\u2019s net<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> however<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> went far and wide. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even after getting convicted<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, he remained in touch with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">several <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prominent personalities until his arrest in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. Lawrence H Summers, former Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton and president of Harvard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, remained in touch with Epstein until at least mid-2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summers, a well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">known economist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> apologised for his continued friendship with Epstein and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will now no longer teach<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Harvard. However, given that he is a tenured professor, he cannot be easily removed from his job at the university. Summers and Epstein exchanged <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/19\/us\/jeffrey-epstein-emails-congress-trump-invs-vis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at least 86 emails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the decade leading up to Epstein\u2019s death by suicide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ehud Barak, former Prime Minister of Israel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">met Epstein in early 2003 and remained in touch with the financier long after his original conviction in 2008. Between 2013 and 2017, Barak and Epstein discussed regional geopolitics in their emails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Peter Mandelson, the Labour Party power-broker in the UK, was fired as ambassador to the US by Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this year due to his connection to Epstein. Mandelson stayed in touch with Epstein till at least 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from these leaders, JPMorgan Chase \u2014 the largest bank in the US \u2014 is coming under the scanner with Democratic politicians calling for a review of how the bank handled Epstein\u2019s money.
