{"id":2172548,"date":"2025-11-22T18:18:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T18:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2172548"},"modified":"2025-11-22T18:18:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T18:18:10","slug":"wicked-on-broadway-was-ripped-by-critics-and-then-became-a-global-hit-worth-billions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/wicked-on-broadway-was-ripped-by-critics-and-then-became-a-global-hit-worth-billions\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Wicked\u2019 on Broadway was ripped by critics \u2014 and then became a global hit worth billions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2025%2F11%2F116025390.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nobody\u2019s shocked that \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d is poised to be Queen of the Box Office this weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the blockbuster sequel to a best picture Oscar nominee that grossed more than $700 million worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Success was so obvious that the Munchkins wouldn\u2019t even bother to come out, come out and sing a happy song about it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star in \u201cWicked: For Good.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, 22 years since Elphaba first defied gravity onstage, what many forget is that \u201cWicked\u201d the musical didn\u2019t start off as a surefire juggernaut that was destined to gross $6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Its yellow brick road was full of hazards from the very start.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2003, during the \u201cWizard of Oz\u201d riff\u2019s tryout in San Francisco, Calif., the musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman was ripped by critics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDing, dong, the witch\u2019s prognosis is uncertain at this stage of \u2018Wicked\u2019,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2003\/legit\/reviews\/wicked-8-1200541131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sniped Variety<\/a>, then the most important out-of-town review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem lies less in the production\u2026 than with a mediocre book, trite lyrics and largely generic music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And your little dog, too!<\/p>\n<p>At the time, The Post\u2019s Michael Riedel reported that out west, Schwartz and director Joe Mantello were at such a boiling point, the two <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2003\/09\/05\/every-witch-way-following-wicked-turns-on-the-road-to-broadway\/\">stopped speaking to each other<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can imagine the fights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you only had a heart!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf <em>you<\/em> only had a brain!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWicked,\u201d starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, was not a critical favorite when it opened in 2003. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Producer David Stone chalked up the theatrical fisticuffs to \u201cnatural creative tension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schwartz, by the way, appears to have natural creative tension with a lot of his collaborators. He infamously butted heads with Bob Fosse during \u201cPippin,\u201d and, I\u2019m told, has with others since then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchwartz has power, and his his-way-or-the-highway attitude was definitely on display,\u201d a source said of his working style during <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/09\/entertainment\/queen-of-versailles-review-kristin-chenoweth-returns-to-broadway-in-a-dire-musical-that-needs-a-wrecking-ball\/\">the panned new Broadway show<\/a> \u201cThe Queen of Versailles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for \u201cWicked,\u201d he made necessary changes. Love interest Fiyero\u2019s song called \u201cWhich Way\u2019s the Party?\u201d (\u201cabysmal,\u201d said Variety) was scrapped and replaced with \u201cDancing Through Life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the book was extensively rewritten by Holzman to make witchy Elphaba less of a womp-womp victim.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Despite losing the Tony Award to \u201cAvenue Q,\u201d the show has been running for 22 years.  <span class=\"credit\">FilmMagic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By September, the $14 million production had built a so-so $3 million advance in New York, and opened on Broadway to yet more critical shrugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is basically a kid\u2019s show with aspirations,\u201d wrote The Post\u2019s Clive Barnes in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2003\/10\/31\/broom-shtick-wicked-witches-most-entrancing\/\">a 2 \u00bd-star review<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/10\/31\/movies\/theater-review-there-s-trouble-in-emerald-city.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Times<\/a>, Ben Brantley adored Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, but called the musical around her \u201cbloated\u201d and said its \u201coddly colorless\u201d main character played by Idina Menzel was \u201call furrowed-brow sincerity and expansive power ballads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Worst of all, eight months later Goliath (\u201cWicked\u201d) lost the best musical Tony Award to David (\u201cAvenue Q\u201d) \u2014 a prediction nobody made.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that night, when Schwartz also lost the best score Tony to the writers of the filthy puppet comedy, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2004\/06\/09\/poor-sports-flee-tonys\/\">he reportedly bolted out of<\/a> Radio City Music Hall.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no place like home, indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Setbacks aplenty. But none have mattered.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWicked: For Good\u201d is estimated to open to $228 million globally. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, \u201cWicked\u201d is the fourth longest-running Broadway musical of all time after something called \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d and has productions all over the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Never underestimate the strength of \u201cOz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the show also initially benefited from debuting when millennials, then teens, had a hankering for singable pop melodies and empowerment stories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two decades later, those same audience members who went with their parents now have that ever bankable combo of wallets, nostalgia and ennui.\u00a0They\u2019re still packing the Gershwin and, this weekend, movie theaters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Good\u201d is estimated to open to $228 million globally, which would be the highest opener for a Broadway musical film adaptation ever.<\/p>\n<p>See?
