No fuss. Just warmth.\u201d<\/p>\n While Kerry was a guest star<\/a> and accustomed to being overlooked by main cast members, she emphasized the inviting atmosphere of The Andy Griffith Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cYou could go to different kinds of shows where the key players don\u2019t mix,\u201d she explained. \u201cPerfectly fine but separate. But not with The Andy Griffith Show<\/em>. You were part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n As for Don Knotts<\/strong>, he infused the set with his lighthearted nature<\/a>. Kerry recalled the actor reading in his chair between takes and hiding in the shadows, checking his script when stand-ins stepped on the soundstage for lighting adjustments.<\/p>\n According to Kerry, when the cameras were ready to roll, Knotts would \u201csay something just as he walked into the light and everyone would laugh. Andy laughed out loud. And Don would look around like, \u2018What?\u2019 And then he\u2019d say, \u2018Are we going to get to work here?\u2019 The fun was allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n Kerry appeared in two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show<\/em>, portraying Bess Muggins \u2014 a wife and mother incarcerated with her family on Christmas Eve \u2014 in season 1\u2019s \u201cChristmas Story\u201d in 1960 and Helen Scobey \u2014 a young woman facing eviction alongside her husband and daughter \u2014 in season 1\u2019s \u201cAndy Forecloses\u201d in 1961.<\/p>\n Griffith and Knotts, meanwhile, starred as Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife on the CBS sitcom, which aired for eight seasons from October 1960 to April 1968. (Knotts exited his main role in 1965 after season 5 but returned as a guest star in the remaining seasons.) Ron Howard<\/strong> and Frances Bavier<\/strong> rounded out the cast as Andy\u2019s son, Opie,<\/a> and his aunt, Bee, respectively.<\/p>\n Howard, 71, is the only main cast member still alive<\/a> today. Bavier died in November 1989 at age 86, followed by Knotts in February 2006 at age 81 and Griffith in July 2012 at age 86.<\/p>\n Although it\u2019s been 57 years since The Andy Griffith Show<\/em> ended, Kerry shared why she thinks the show still resonates with fans.<\/p>\n \u201cHow does it still connect?\u201d she pondered. \u201cI think once they glom onto it \u2026 they see something different. Something nice. They recognize someone they knew. Or they say, \u2018Oh, look how that turned.\u2019 It touches their hearts. And their minds.
