Brendan Fraser addressed Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s decision to shelve the completed Batgirl <\/em>movie, in which he plays Firefly. In a new interview, he called out the studio\u2019s decision in 2022 to cancel the film\u2019s release, discussing how it impacts a \u201cgeneration of girls\u201d and how movies are being detrimentally \u201ccommodified\u201d by Hollywood.<\/p>\n \u201cThe tragedy of that is that there\u2019s a generation of little girls who don\u2019t have a heroine to look up to and go, \u2018She looks like me,\u2019\u201d he said in a recent interview with The Associated Press<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n The shelved film stars Afro-Dominican actress Leslie Grace in the titular role<\/a> and she would have represented the first Batgirl to headline her own film. The cast also included Ivory Aquino<\/a> as the first openly transgender character in a DC Comics movie (Aquino is also transgender).<\/p>\n Fraser also addressed how he views Hollywood\u2019s approach to films in the current climate. \u201cThe product \u2014 I\u2019m sorry, \u2018content\u2019 \u2014 is being commodified,\u2019 he told AP<\/em>, \u201cto the extent that it\u2019s more valuable to burn it down and get the insurance on it than to give it a shot in the marketplace. I mean, with respect, we could blight itself.\u201d<\/p>\n Shot in Scotland, the Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah-directed Batgirl<\/em> was shelved in August 2022, when Warner Bros. Discovery decided to kill releasing the completed film. \u201cA whole movie,\u201d Fraser said. \u201cI mean, there were four floors of production in Glasgow. I was sneaking into the art department just to geek out.\u201d<\/p>\n The cast was apparently not given warning about its demise, and were \u201cblindsided\u201d when the news was announced, sources\u00a0told\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> at the time. As for why it was nixed, one source said that test audiences thought it was like \u201ca bad episode of TV,\u201d and another said \u201cit\u2019s definitely not theatrical.\u201d<\/p>\n Fraser, who took home the Best Actor Oscar<\/a> for his performance in 2022\u2019s The Whale<\/a><\/em>, is starring in Rental Family<\/em>, which opened in theaters this weekend.
