The Whoniverse\u2014the worlds spawned from the BBC\u2019s long-running <\/span>Doctor Who <\/span><\/i>television series\u2014will continue to expand in the upcoming spinoff series, <\/span>The War Between the Land and the Sea<\/span><\/i>, starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. These are an ancient reptilian species that ruled the Earth before humans, but went into hibernation to survive a catastrophe that was on the horizon. They re-emerged to reclaim the planet as their own after being reawakened by the Master, who wanted to use them as an army to conquer the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>When they first approached me<\/span><\/a> about coming back to Doctor Who in 2021, this was the first bit of my pitch,” Davies explained. “I had this idea separately first. But weirdly, it needs the <\/span>Doctor Who<\/span><\/i> setting. If I just go and pitch this cold, saying, \u2018There is a race of creatures that live in the sea,’ they\u2019d say, ‘Really? You sure?’ The pre-existence of the Sea Devils takes all the problems out of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This new series was created to be a modern re-imagination of the original story from 1972, but rather than being a straight continuation, <\/span>The War Between the Land and the Sea <\/span><\/i>will use the details of the original to create a more contemporary version.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>I wanted to show the BBC<\/span><\/a> what this universe is capable of,\u201d Davies shared of the connection between the shows. \u201cAnd the potential that it has, and the punch that it can deliver.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n While this new series will utilize a pre-existing story and race, it will be a standalone story from whatever occurred in <\/span>Doctor Who<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The official plot of <\/span>The War Between the Land and the Sea <\/span><\/i>series reads: \u201c<\/span>When a fearsome and ancient species<\/span><\/a> emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered.
