Following widespread backlash<\/a> over setlist repetition at Tool Live in the Sand<\/strong> (to the point of a class-action lawsuit<\/a>), the iconic prog-metal band broke open its songbook over the weekend in New Zealand. For the kickoff to an international tour, Tool busted out four songs not played in over 20 years.<\/p>\n The tour started on Saturday with the first of two shows at Spark Arena<\/strong> in Auckland, NZ. After regular heavy-hitters \u201cThe Grudge\u201d and \u201cFear Inoculum\u201d got the show going, Tool reached back\u00a010,000 Days<\/em> (well, technically only 5,952 days) for its first performance of \u201cLost Keys (Blame Hofmann)\u201d since August 7th, 2009, per\u00a0Setlist.fm<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n Maynard James Keenan<\/strong>,\u00a0Danny Carey<\/strong>,\u00a0Adam Jones<\/strong>, and Justin Chancellor<\/strong> only went deeper from there, later bringing back Lateralus<\/em>\u2018 \u201cDisposition\u201d and immediately following it with \u00c6nima<\/em>\u2018s \u201cH.\u201d Neither song had been seen since 2002, last appearing within a week of each other on November 24th and 18th, respectively. Even after \u201cH.\u201d had been gone 23 years, the arena full of fans didn\u2019t miss a cue as they sang along, \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d a cappella with Maynard.<\/p>\n Tool still had one more surprise during the encore, performing its second-ever cover of\u00a0Black Sabbath<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cHand of Doom\u201d, a cover the band debuted on July 5th at\u00a0Ozzy Osbourne<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Back To The Beginning<\/strong> farewell concert in Birmingham, England.<\/p>\n Tool returned to the Spark Arena today, November 23rd (though now it\u2019s tomorrow in New Zealand), and proved Saturday\u2019s setlist experimentation wasn\u2019t a one-off. Though the show started similarly with \u201cFear Inoculum\u201d, \u201cThe Grudge\u201d, \u201cLost Keys\u201d, and \u201cRosetta Stoned\u201d, Tool then brought back a pair of 10,000 Days<\/em> songs back-to-back with \u201cIntension\u201d (LTP 3\/27\/14<\/a>) and \u201cRight in Two\u201d (LTP 5\/24\/22<\/a>).<\/p>\n The bust-outs kept coming with \u201cPrison Sex\u201d, taken from Tool\u2019s 1993 studio debut, Undertow<\/em>, and not performed since April 14th, 2002<\/a>, at the 1,014-capacity Diamond Hall<\/strong> in Nagoya, Japan. Finally, the band started the encore not with a bust-out, but a debut instead, performing \u201cMockingbeat\u201d live for the first time, more than six years after it came out on 2019\u2019s\u00a0Fear Inoculum<\/em>.<\/p>\n The good news is that Tool appears to be (finally) dusting off long-overlooked corners of its extensive catalog. The bad news (for U.S. fans) is that it\u2019s happening on the other side of the world. Tool is in Australia and Asia in November and December, coming to Hawaii on the 19th and 20th, before returning to the mainland to headline Sonic Temple<\/strong><\/a> in Columbus, OH, on Sunday, May 17th, 2026.
