Kit Harington is taking on sibling rivalry in The Family Plan 2<\/a>,<\/em> the Apple TV<\/a> sequel to the 2023 action-comedy that introduced Mark Wahlberg<\/a> as Dan Morgan, a former assassin trying to keep his family safe and his past behind him. This time, the drama hits even closer to home with the arrival of Dan\u2019s long-lost brother, Finn, played by Harington.<\/p>\n The role marks a shift for the actor, who\u2019s best known for brooding heroes. But this time around, he\u2019s leaning into the action comedy chaos.<\/p>\n When the offer came in, Harington didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was great. I\u2019d seen the first one and really loved it and knew what it was, knew what it was doing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it was a great family action comedy. And I love a movie where it knows exactly what it is, and it does it brilliantly. Joining it was pretty simple. They kind of, \u2018Do you want to play a villain? Do you want to film in your hometown? Do you want to fight Mark Wahlberg?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Yes.\u2019 Tick, tick, tick. So the main pull, in some ways, was playing a character I don\u2019t often get offered, which is the baddie or the antagonist. And that I was like, \u2018Yeah, why not? That sounds fun.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Harington\u2019s character doesn\u2019t just bring tension\u2014he adds a whole new layer to the Morgan family dynamic. As Finn, he shows up with a personal history that Dan\u2019s never been aware of, but that\u2019s shaped both their lives.<\/p>\n \u201cI think what the first film did well and what hopefully this one does is it mirrors a kind of family dysfunctionality, but in a way that\u2019s very surmountable,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd I guess I add to that by being this long-lost brother who Dan doesn\u2019t realize he needs in his life, but the other guy, Finn, has been focused on his whole life. And there are parts of that story I\u2019m sure families can relate to that kind of adds into that dysfunctional kind of mix that they did so well in the first one.\u201d<\/p>\n Behind the scenes, director Simon Cellan Jones said he was confident audiences would see a new side of Harington\u2014and not just because he\u2019s playing the villain.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I think Kit had such good instincts for this,\u201d Jones said. \u201cI mean, I think a lot of people will be surprised to see him as a bad guy, but he plays it with real menace and danger. But he\u2019s got a little wit to him, Kit. He\u2019s just an instinctively funny guy. So I wouldn\u2019t say his character is a comedic character, but he sort of contributes to the humor just by his presence.\u201d<\/p>\n Adding to the appeal: Harington got to film major parts of the movie in London, where he grew up.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I think this movie\u2019s been turned around quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cWe filmed this in January, and so the Christmas lights weren\u2019t taken down yet. So we got to use those, and now we are doing this junket just as they\u2019ve been put back up. That\u2019s quite fast. They\u2019ve done well. I love London at Christmas. It\u2019s part of my memory base growing up. I was raised in London. I think that for me, the three cities as a Westerner, anyway, New York, Paris, and London, and we do two of those in this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n While the action and humor are big on-screen, Jones said the story still comes down to the familiar push-and-pull of family life\u2014something that\u2019s always evolving.<\/p>\n \u201cFamilies, they just keep growing, don\u2019t they?\u201d he said. \u201cTheir relationships evolve. The love stays, but the fighting stays as well. So I think they\u2019re always going to be interesting to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n The Family Plan 2<\/em> is now streaming on Apple TV.
