While Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David get most of the credit for\u00a0Seinfeld<\/i>, the show utilized quite a number of talented writers over the years, including\u00a0<\/span>Larry Charles<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Carol Leifer<\/span><\/a> and, on one occasion, some unnamed rando in the studio audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth season episode \u201cThe Junior Mint\u201d featured a\u00a0<\/span>medically dubious plotline\u00a0<\/span><\/a>in which Jerry and Kramer dropped a piece of candy into Elaine\u2019s ex-boyfriend\u2019s abdominal cavity during a surgery, inadvertently saving his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The episode also gave us a story about how Jerry can\u2019t remember his new girlfriend\u2019s name, his only clue being that it \u201crhymes with a part of the female anatomy.\u201d After workshopping possible names with George, including \u201cHest\u201d and \u201cBovary,\u201d in the final moments of the show, Jerry’s date confronts him and forces him to take a big swing-and-a-miss at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jerry\u2019s guesses \u2013 \u201cMulva,\u201d \u201cGipple\u201d and \u201cLoleola\u201d \u2013 don\u2019t go over well, and she, understandably, storms out of the apartment. After watching her leave, Jerry has a sudden\u00a0epiphany. He races to the window, opens the blinds and shouts \u201cDOLORES!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not how it played out in the script.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe sat in the room for a long time trying to figure out how to pay off that story,\u201d Larry Charles explained in Season Four\u2019s \u201cSeinfeld: Inside Look\u201d DVD bonus feature. \u201cAnd everybody was pitching, but I pitched the idea that maybe her name rhymes with a body part.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe name that the script had as her actual name was \u2018Chloris,\u2019\u201d Castle Rock executive Glenn Padnick recalled. \u201cAnd I remember thinking that that really wasn\u2019t very good. But we went into the taping that night, and I sit in the stands during the taping, and between scenes, as the plot was emerging, the warm-up man asked people in the audience if anybody could guess what the name of Jerry\u2019s girlfriend, in fact, was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd one woman guesses \u2018Dolores,\u2019\u201d Padnick continued. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sitting there thinking, \u2018That is a better name than the name we have in our script.\u2019 So I got out of my seat and I went down to the stage\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jerry used the woman\u2019s suggestion in the take that made it into the final cut, despite the fact that the audience member had, in effect, given the script a last-minute punch-up and created one of the show\u2019s most memorable punchlines. However, the\u00a0Seinfeld<\/i> staff played it off as though\u00a0they<\/i> had come up with the name. \u201cAs the audience was filing out, I heard the warm-up man say to the woman, \u2018Hey you guessed the right name,\u2019\u201d Padnick noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They couldn\u2019t even give her a complimentary pack of Junior Mints for saving the show?<\/span><\/p>\n
