Clover\u2019s 1992 book, <em>Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film<\/em>, which explores the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/FinalGirl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:final girl;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">final girl<\/a>\u201d horror film trope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCompletely stolen,\u201d says Emmie-Mae Avery (vocals, keys, synths), referring to the band\u2019s name during a video call from London, where the group is based.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More from Spin:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Avery is a bit late to the call because she\u2019s just finishing dinner. Vocalist-guitarist Billy Ward has already joined\u2014and we chit-chat as we wait for her to get situated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cChorizo pasta-making went a little bit over expected,\u201d says Avery, laughing, her screen on audio only. \u201cOkay, right. I\u2019m just joining on my laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She suddenly appears onscreen, and we get down to business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I discovered Man\/Woman\/Chainsaw\u2014an art-punk group steadily gaining mainstream traction\u2014on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FYWaJTOyUp0?si=giy8edpXtTtPZWyq\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:KEXP\u2019s YouTube channel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">KEXP\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>, a raucous live performance recorded in-studio back in March, blown away by their symphonic grunge-punk sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The band started during the lockdown in 2021, when middle school (or secondary school, as they call it in the U.K.) friends Ward and Vera Lepp\u00e4nen (vocals, bass) began performing cover songs together. Pretty much within two months, we were doing like three or four shows a week sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Since the band\u2019s inception, Man\/Woman\/Chainsaw has played well over 100 live shows; not bad for a group whose members are all 21 and younger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done our Hamburg, definitely,\u201d says Ward, referring to the Beatles\u2019 early days of playing long, grueling sets in the German city\u2019s red-light district years before appearing on <em>The Ed Sullivan Show<\/em> in 1964.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The band actually did play Hamburg, Ward tells me, a few weeks prior to this interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Like the Beatles, playing so many shows helped Man\/Woman\/Chainsaw hone their craft and perfect their songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI think especially in the start, we were always testing out new material, because we weren\u2019t really recording anything,\u201d says Avery. \u201cWe were just trying to make the best half-hour live set as we could. Whereas, I feel like if you go straight into recording stuff, you don\u2019t always get that feel for it, which I feel is the most important part. But it was really fun. It was so hot in March. We were like, \u2018This is a holiday, let\u2019s eat pizza and go out and get on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.li.me\/vehicles\/scooter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lime scooters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Lime scooters<\/a>.\u2019 Yeah, it was lit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI ate so much junk. It was great,\u201d Ward chimes in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I ask if they ate barbecue while they were in Texas. Because when you\u2019re in Texas, you have to eat barbecue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was possibly one of the nicest things I\u2019ve eaten in my life,\u201d says Ward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Our interview is during a busy time for the band, as they\u2019re in the middle of recording their debut album. At this moment, they\u2019re not allowed to say much about it, other than the record will be released sometime next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The band, however, has a new single, \u201cOnly Girl,\u201d which came out November 17. And, they\u2019ve switched to a new label, Fiction Records, home to, most famously, the Cure and St. Vincent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One of Man\/Woman\/Chainsaw\u2019s big goals is to play more shows in America. Despite the success they had at South By Southwest, though, they say they\u2019ll wait until things are a little less chaotic here in the States before returning. Until then, they\u2019ll be playing more shows in the U.K. and continuing work on their upcoming album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cRecording music has been really fun,\u201d says Ward. \u201cI think down the line we want to keep, just pushing it, like just do as many live shows as we can get in front of people, have fun\u2026and see where that goes. And then have fun making records.
