In the past, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maggiekoerner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans singer-songwriter<\/a> says, she had often shifted the power over to the producers she was working with.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t that things in the past had necessarily gone wrong, but for her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maggiekoerner.com\/music\" target=\"_blank\">fourth full-length album<\/a>, full of personal, resonant songs, Koerner wanted to trust herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just had a pattern of going to the studio, letting somebody else steer my ship and feeling like something got lost in translation,\u201d she says. \u201cI felt as if maybe the producers were putting their sound as a filter on top of my sound, which is natural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Koerner couldn\u2019t do it alone and turned to a group of New Orleans friends to help, including Ajai Combelic, who co-produced the album, The Revivalists\u2019 frontman David Shaw, bassist Gina Leslie, drummers Howe Pearson and Aaron Boudreaux, keys player Andriu Yanovski and more.<\/p>\n<p>The result, the remarkable <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/orcd.co\/4zddwv3\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cUpstate,\u201d<\/a> took Koerner back to the feeling of when she first started performing in her hometown of Shreveport, before moving to New Orleans, performing with Galactic, touring widely and carving out a place in the music community as a powerful vocalist and songwriter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstate\u201d is now available, and Koerner celebrates its release with a show at 9 p.m. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketweb.com\/event\/maggie-koerner-tipitinas-tickets\/13885654?pl=tipitinas\" target=\"_blank\">Saturday, Nov. 29<\/a>, at Tipitina\u2019s. People Museum opens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got back to my roots of where I come from and what I sounded like before I ever started recording music,\u201d Koerner says. That was \u201calmost 15, 20 years ago, right? I know who I am now as a woman, who I am as an artist, and so I was ready to get back to that pure place of making music for music\u2019s sake, the way I was doing in Shreveport.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sarah&#039;s Farm\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uKhqyiGemM8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>With a blend of folk, country, indie rock and some truly grand moments, \u201cUpstate\u201d feels raw and relatable. There are a lot of deep emotions on the record, but it isn\u2019t a sad album. There\u2019s a recognizable bittersweetness as Koerner reflects on the high highs and low lows of past relationships, memories of friends and her knotted roots in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>Koerner wanted to \u201cget back to that sound of just making music for the joy of making music,\u201d she says. \u201cMaking something you want to listen to, before you get any industry or people in your ear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several songs on \u201cUpstate\u201d center snapshots from past romantic relationships, including the singles \u201cSarah\u2019s Farm,\u201d which Koerner says is about her \u201cfavorite ex-boyfriend,\u201d and \u201cOaxaca,\u201d about an abusive relationship. Powell also co-wrote the swelling, string-backed folk song \u201cThey Say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And on the track \u201cDMT,\u201d featuring Americana singer-songwriter Hans Williams, Koerner speaks to a friend about the time they smoked DMT \u2014 \u201cYou saw death \/ I saw music dance right outta me,\u201d she sings \u2014 and builds into surreal, poetic associations. There also are a couple of instrumental tracks, like Yanovski\u2019s \u201cAndriu\u2019s Reprise\u201d and \u201cKeep Your Heroes Handsome,\u201d a voice memo Koerner recorded with other musicians in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sometimes like songs that are just drops in a moment,\u201d Koerner says. \u201cJust an indie film, a moment of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koerner <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maggiekoerner\/\" target=\"_blank\">grew up<\/a> with a mom who was a school teacher and a father who was a mechanic and business owner. She loved to sing but aside from a brief stint performing in a church youth band, she didn\u2019t pursue her own music until her early 20s.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from LSU Shreveport with a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology, Koerner was considering working toward her master\u2019s when she met an actor who \u201cconvinced me that I was talented enough to give [music] a damn try for a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While working as a waitress at her dad\u2019s restaurant, Koerner started playing singer-songwriter nights around Shreveport and meeting other musicians. Around the time she was 23, Koerner caught the attention of drummer Brady Blade, a Shreveport native, and worked with him to produce her debut \u201cQuarter Life\u201d in 2011.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oaxaca (2025)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vEAHlozXiJ0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Things moved quickly. In the same year as her first album, Koerner met Shaw and The Revivalists at a bar in Shreveport, and soon, Shaw asked her to contribute to the song <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Smb8ahl3A10\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHey Na Na\u201d<\/a> for Galactic, putting her into <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Irma Thomas and Galactic release collaborative album 'Audience With the Queen'\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/tncms\/asset\/editorial\/fdb2aec4-97e5-40eb-8eb0-51abad8e0314\/\" target=\"_blank\">the funk band\u2019s<\/a> orbit.<\/p>\n<p>At 24, Koerner moved to New Orleans and began performing around town. A year later, she recorded her second album, 2013\u2019s \u201cNeutral Ground,\u201d and was invited to be Galactic\u2019s vocalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like going to get your PhD in performing,\u201d Koerner says about her time with the veteran band. \u201cThese guys have been doing it for 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koerner performed and toured with Galactic for close to two years before she decided to again focus on her solo music. She\u2019s also opened for Band of Horses, The Head &amp; The Heart and Shakey Graves and performed with Gov\u2019t Mule.<\/p>\n<p>As Koerner began to feel ready to record what would become \u201cUpstate,\u201d she took some time to consider who she wanted to work with but found a lot of inspiration in the singer-songwriter scene happening around the 9th Ward. She also launched a GoFundMe to help create the record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not have any fucking idea how I was going to do any of this. And then a year later, I was doing it, and now a year after that, it\u2019s released,\u201d Koerner says. \u201cI\u2019m really proud we all came together to make this beautiful piece of art.
